DISC Membership & Affiliation

On behalf of the staff at the Data Institute for Societal Challenges (DISC), we thank you for your interest in becoming a member of our center. We offer separate membership tiers for faculty, post-doctoral scholars, staff, and students at the University of Oklahoma. 

We also offer the opportunity to be only listed in our Data Science Directory at OU. If you are interested in being a part of our Data Science Community at OU, please fill out our form below.

Are there any expectations?

Yes, depending on the level of commitment that you choose on our form, we expect you to participate in a number of the following activities during the calendar year. We are always open to suggestions for additional activities.

Expectations

Faculty, Staff, Postdoctoral Scholar

  • Membership in Data Science communities of practice
  • Participating in project ideation and team-building workshops
  • Developing courses within your department, interdisciplinary capstones or other types of curricula
  • Competing for pilot research awards
  • Attending or leading trainings
  • Mentoring other faculty
  • Proposing and hosting speakers
  • Organizing, presenting, or attending seminars
  • Reviewing DISC proposals
  • Being a speaker at DISC workshops, seminars, and other related events.
  • Being a reviewer for the seed funding program
  • Promoting the DISC Center to other faculty, staff, and students
  • Planning events such as workshops, symposia, etc.

Graduate & Undergraduate Students

  • Participating in project ideation and team-building workshops
  • Compete in DISC approved DS competitions
  • Attending on-campus trainings
  • Mentoring undergraduates
  • Volunteering for community outreach activities
  • Organizing, presenting, or attending seminars
  • Present research at recognized data science or data-enabled research conference
  • Author (or Co-author) conference or journal paper related to data-enabled research
  • Lead or contribute to tutorials on data science or data-enabled research technique including:
    • New programming languages
    • New database management techniques
    • Machine learning techniques and their use
