Welcome to the General Surgery residency page for the OU-TU School of Community Medicine. Our mission is to produce clinically sound surgeons with a strong foundation from evidenced-based learning and the ability to adapt to evolving clinical practices for proven innovations and advancements. This experience includes fellowship-trained faculty with expertise in Bariatric surgery, Minimally Invasive surgery, Hepatobiliary surgery, Colorectal surgery, Trauma surgery, Critical Care, Endoscopy, Pediatric surgery, and Vascular surgery. Our residents will have a broad clinical experience and be well-versed in academic medicine. There is also a robust research experience in our training program. Our program is known for graduating residents who can operate with confidence and competence. Additionally, our residents will have the qualities to make them highly competitive for any surgical fellowship or be prepared for clinical General Surgery in any type of practice.
Our program currently accepts four categorical residents per year. A dedicated research year is possible on an individual basis after the PGY3 year. Over the past five years, approximately half pursue fellowships and half practice community general surgery. A strength of our program is the camaraderie amongst our residents and a close association between attending surgeons and residents. In addition to academic prowess, we are looking for students with good character, who work well within a team, and who are committed to both their education and to improving the healthcare system as a whole for better patient care.
