The sports medicine fellowship is designed to meet the educational needs of the primary care physician with special interest in sports medicine as an area of practice and to prepare the physician to provide for the health care needs of individuals in prevention and treatment of non-surgical orthopedic problems and injuries. The curriculum is flexible in meeting the needs and interests of the individual fellow while meeting the standard and scope of sports medicine as an area of practice. The curriculum includes both prevention and treatment of orthopedic and sports medicine injuries and diseases. It promotes healthful lifestyles for some and optimal functional status for others.
The program of study includes diagnostic orthopedics, exercise prescription, and sports/orthopedic surgery electives. Clinical experiences include private practice sports medicine clinics at Eastern Oklahoma Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center, injury clinics at two Division 1 universities and one Division 2 University, and on-site management of sporting events. Team physician responsibilities include coverage of the Los Angeles Dodgers AA baseball team, University of Tulsa, Oral Roberts University, Northeastern State University, and a local class 6-A high school team. Fellows also are involved in planning and coverage of the Route 66 Marathon.
