Welcome

As we rapidly approach the start of a new academic year, we are excited to share the latest news from the Price College of Business. On that front, we are shifting away from our legacy publication Price Magazine, which went fully digital last fall, to this bi-monthly e-Newsletter. We hope the increased frequency, along with other updates, will help keep you plugged into all the latest and greatest news, research, and achievements coming from Price College.

One of the biggest news items is that construction is officially underway inside Adams Hall! First off, our Robert M. Zinke Energy Management Program offices are getting a makeover, complete with new carpet and all the trimmings. I’m sure newly-appointed program director Mike McConnell would love for you to stop by soon and see all the progress being made there in room 105K. And next door, in 104A, crews are hard at work updating the Robert M. Zinke Energy Management Program Collaborative Classroom into the state-of-the-art facility our students expect and require for a world-class education. Opening in time for fall classes, the classroom will serve as home to all Energy Management classes going forward. Special thanks to Mr. Zinke for his continued support of our Energy Management program and students!

On the third floor of Adams Hall, the offices of the Division of Finance and the Division of Management Information Systems are receiving a much-needed renovation. The new spaces will include improved faculty offices, study spaces for undergraduate and graduate students, conference rooms, and more. We are so grateful for our partners who are helping make this important upgrade a reality, and there are still opportunities for others to give. We hope to open the third floor in time for fall 2020 classes, so stay tuned for more progress updates! In the meantime, please click here for more information about the renovation projects.

The University of Oklahoma’s single day of campus-wide giving is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 10, and once again, we’ll be calling on our partners for support. Just like last year, OU Giving Day provides numerous opportunities for supporting scholarships and programs at Price, at any level, so please keep an eye out for that. In the meantime, we invite you to consider giving to our Momentum Scholarships, which support undergraduate students, or our Do More Sooner^®Scholarships for MBA students. With your help, students can focus more on their studies and less on financial concerns while obtaining the education necessary for success. Thank you for your support!

Tackle Big Issues | Energy

Thanks to Price College alumna and Board of Advisors member Glenda Schwarz (BBA, Accounting, 1988), Vice President and Controller of ConocoPhillips, part of a $6 million gift from ConocoPhillips, originally made in 2007, has been reallocated to support an endowed faculty position in Price College’s Steed School of Accounting: the ConocoPhillips Chair in Energy Accounting.

A simple bet changed the lives of Chip Taylor and Lisa Simon Taylor. More than 40 years later, the legacy of that bet could change the lives of OU students for decades to come through a $252,500 gift to the OU Foundation. In the fall of 1978, the two sophomores found themselves in the same accounting class, and the rest is history.

The third OU Energy and Commodities Finance Research Conference is scheduled Sept. 19-20 at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History. The event, which is organized in partnership with the Review of Financial Studies, features keynote speaker Dr. Robert Engle and numerous guest presenters. Registration is now underway for a three-day oil and gas program for those in finance-related fields. Oil & Gas Operations, Financial Information and Strategic Implications will be held Oct. 31-Nov. 2 in New York City. A spate of guest presenters has been announced, as well as a team rate for a minimum of three participants.

Tackle Big Issues | Economic Development

Robert Engle, the Michael Armellino Professor of Management and Financial Services, Director of The Volatility Institute at New York University, and 2003 Nobel Laureate in Economics, is the guest speaker for the Deane and Ginger Kanaly Lecture Series, scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, in the Meacham Auditorium inside the Oklahoma Memorial Union.

Info & Registration

The American Economic Association, in conjunction with 61 associations in related disciplines known as the Allied Social Science Associations (ASSA), holds a three-day meeting each January to present papers on general economics topics. Pradeep Yadav has organized the India session at the next ASSA annual conference, scheduled Jan. 3-5, 2020 in San Diego, Calif.

Tackle Big Issues | Healthcare

The new Healthcare major is in the committee process with a slated approval for fall 2020. The major includes the following classes: Healthcare Marketing and Administration, Healthcare Supply Chain Management, Ethical and Regulatory Issues in Healthcare, Competitive and Economic Environment of Healthcare Administration, and more, including a data modeling class.

Save the date! The Center for the Business of Healthcare’s next Healthcare Day event is scheduled 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2019, and will include guest speakers and presentations. Details will follow soon, so stay tuned for more!

Tackle Big Issues | Globalization

The summer of 2019 boasted the most students interning internationally in 20 years! In total, twelve students fulfilled internships in seven countries this summer. International business student Samantha Delgado, who interned in Prague this summer, wrote a post on homesickness for the CEA Study Abroad blog.

Generate Business Insights

The Tom Love Innovation Hub and Ronnie K. Irani Center for the Creation of Economic Wealth are among the founding institutions behind a new EcoInnovation Network, which will facilitate the creation of innovation centers in North America with a focus on cultivating leaders in innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable growth. Personnel from Price College, the I-Hub, and the I-CCEW attended meetings with the U.S., Canada, and Mexico in June in Mexico City.

The annual Oklahoma Women Impacting STEM and Entrepreneurship Conference (OK-WISE) is scheduled 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23, in Tulsa. This conference highlights the scientific, economic, and societal impacts being made by women in Oklahoma, and includes multiple guest speakers, panels, and workshops. Tickets are going quick, so register today!

To build upon the success of the Oklahoma Catalyst programs and grow Oklahoma City’s biotech community, the Tom Love Innovation Hub has been funded through a $100,000 grant from the Presbyterian Health Foundation to launch a pair of life sciences-focused Oklahoma Catalyst programs with the support of the OUHSC and Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.

Prepare Leaders

In early August, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion hosted high school students from the Moore/Norman area. The day camp featured guest speakers who presented about Price College, the Tom Love Innovation Hub, the JCPenney Leadership Program, and diversity and multicultural opportunities. Courtney Knight, a Price alumna and owner of Penn Model and Talent, encouraged students to follow their dreams.

The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board, the U.S. regulator for the auditing profession, recently named accounting student Jeffrey Avena as a PCAOB Scholar for the 2019-20 academic year. Avena will receive a $10,000 scholarship. Avena, who is pursuing his B/MAcc degree, is the only University of Oklahoma student to receive this distinction.

This year’s Sooner Launch Pad is in the books! Congratulations to our two People’s Choice winners, Bridal Wave and Menstrual Mates, as well as participant team FocusBack. Over the course of two nights in Tulsa and Oklahoma City, each group presented their business plans and research to crowds of students, alumni and local business owners.

For the last 10 years, Tom Lumpkin has offered an annual Social Entrepreneurship Doctoral Seminar in different cities for Ph.D. students from around the world. This year, the course was hosted by the Social Innovation Change Initiative at the Harvard Kennedy School in Cambridge, Mass., just prior to the Academy of Management meeting, which was held in Boston in August. Lumpkin hosted a gathering to celebrate the seminar’s 10^th anniversary, with previous guest panelists and scholars.

Katherine Eaves has been promoted to the new Price College of Business Presentation Coach. Dr. Eaves, who formerly served as Instructor of Business Communication, will be filling the role as presentations coach for all undergraduate students by replacing David Williams, who retired earlier this year. Please join us in congratulating her on this new opportunity!

Logan Wudi, a fifth-year finance student, is training for the 2022 Winter Olympics in skeleton, a winter sport similar to bobsled but for a solo racer. After she graduates in December 2019, she plans to pursue skeleton training full time.

Faculty Research

An article by Mark Bolino and OU alumnus Anthony Klotz (Ph.D., Business Administration, 2013), Do You Really Know Why Employees Leave Your Company?, was published by Harvard Business Review.

Research co-conducted by Brant Christensen was cited in an article, The benefits of a ‘decomposed’ approach to group audit planning, by the Journal of Accountancy, where he also was interviewed.

Audit research co-conducted by Lubomir Litov was cited in an article by MarketWatch titled Carl Icahn May be Right About Occidental’s Anadarko Deal, But for a Different Reason.

In Memoriam

Graham Johnston (BBA, Management, 1958), who holds record numbers of swimming records and swam in the 1952 Olympics, has passed away. Johnston holds 180 U.S. Masters Swimming records and 105 FINA Masters World Records, the highest of any male in the world. Among other distinctions, Johnston won silver and gold medals in the British Commonwealth Games in 1950, swam in the Olympics in 1952, and has been awarded six All American awards. He was featured in the Fall 2018 Price E-Zine.

Rufus Jess “R.J.” Maddox, Jr. (BBA, Management, 1975) has passed away. A lifelong resident of Ardmore, Maddox was an avid OU fan who never missed a game. He loved spending time with his grandkids and especially fishing with his grandson. Maddox retired from Best Buy, where he served in management.
