Office of Research Integrity

The Office of Research Integrity plays a vital role in upholding the University of Oklahoma's highest standards of ethics and integrity in research. The Research Integrity Officer (RIO) is committed to ensuring that research is conducted with the utmost integrity, honesty, and respect.

Educate: We support comprehensive education and training programs that empower researchers, faculty, and students with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complex landscape of research ethics and integrity.

Promote Ethics: We actively promote ethical research practices by offering guidance on responsible and ethical conduct of research.

Prevent Misconduct: We work diligently to prevent research misconduct by fostering a culture of open communication, accountability, and collaboration. Our office provides resources to help researchers avoid unintentional ethical breaches and to address potential issues before they escalate.

Investigate and Resolve: In cases where concerns arise, the RIO conducts thorough and impartial investigations to ensure that allegations of research misconduct are addressed promptly and fairly. We aim to maintain the credibility of our research enterprise while upholding the rights and dignity of all parties involved.

Consultation: We are available to provide individual consultations for researchers seeking guidance on ethical dilemmas, manuscript preparation, and navigating complex ethical issues.

iThenticate: OU researchers can use iThenticate to review their own manuscripts, grant proposals, and scholarly work for text similarity and AI-generated content. This tool helps ensure originality, proper citation, and research integrity before submission or publication.

Reporting: The RIO provides a confidential reporting mechanism for anyone who suspects or witnesses research misconduct, ensuring that concerns can be raised without fear of retaliation.

Supporting Research Integrity with iThenticate

OU researchers can use iThenticate to review their own manuscripts, grant proposals, and scholarly work for text similarity and AI-generated content. This tool helps ensure originality, proper citation, and research integrity before submission or publication.

Researchers at The University of Oklahoma (OU) on all campuses have access to iThenticate, a web-based application that enables authors to compare their own manuscripts, grant proposals, and other scholarly writing against web and scholarly publications to check for similar or duplicate content. iThenticate also provides an AI writing detection indicator to provide insight as to whether the submission contains AI-generated content.

Authors and co-authors can screen their own work to verify originality and detect potential plagiarism or improper citation of others’ work prior to dissemination or publication. Text similarity detection tools like iThenticate can be especially helpful for collaborative team-based research projects where authors and co-authors rely on others to provide portions of text for manuscripts, grant proposals or progress reports.

OU research community members who wish to screen work from others, i.e. research articles where they are not themselves author or co-author, should contact their academic home campus Research Integrity Office to discuss the request
