As Sooner football got ready for its spring game, Gaylord students kicked into full gear, preparing for not only the game, but the Kyler Murray Heisman statue reveal. There were many ways Gaylord students got involved in Sooner sports, from on-campus to internships outside the university.

From his time as student government president, to his stint as a Gaylord Ambassador to the lunch with Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt that he flipped into a full-time job, J.D. Baker made a name for himself on campus and provided a perfect template for a successful career. Baker graduated in 2018 with a B.A. in public relations and a minor in African American studies.

Bittersweet. The word evokes rich chocolate, not too syrupy or saccharine. Merriam-Webster defines it as “pleasure accompanied by suffering or regret.” It is the perfect word to describe how I feel about leaving Gaylord College and going back into the world of full-time journalism.

Kate Furney, a senior at Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication, has been named this year's outstanding senior in Creative Media Production. Originally from Frisco, Texas, Katherine transferred to OU from Sam Houston State University after her freshman year.

Does Superman bleed? Did Icarus sweat when he touched the sun? Did Theseus think about his mother before fighting the minotaur? It would be nice to know the heroes of our stories are just as fallible as us, to know that Hercules gets pimples just like the common folk, but that would remove the beauty of being human: hardship.

Little did I know that returning to my hometown and OU in 2015 – after being away 28 years – would be so rewarding. Thank you, Ed Kelley, for making that happen. After much deep reflection, and the passing of a best friend, I retired effective, May 15.

Gaylord College annually presents 16 graduating students with the Outstanding Senior Award. Noelle Stark, a senior advertising major, is receiving Gaylord College’s 2023 Advertising Outstanding Senior Award. This award is given to students who show great leadership skills and achievements during their time at Gaylord.

As many of you know, I am stepping down as dean of the college on June 30, the end of OU’s fiscal year, after eight years in the position. My reason for doing so is simple: the march of time. In my case, another milestone birthday (No. 70) awaits. As an alum of the program myself, I firmly believe Gaylord deserves a younger leader with new ideas and a fresh perspective to take it to even greater heights.

Each year, 16 OU undergraduates are chosen as Outstanding Seniors for their remarkable achievements in service and leadership for their given college. Gaylord College was proud to announce Jackson Conner as its 2022-23 Outstanding Senior.

Interestingly, I almost went to OSU instead of OU. I was set and excited to attend until my mom pushed me to tour OU. I have talked about being a Sooner since I was a kid, but I thought it was too far out of reach. I toured the university and knew I needed to be here.

Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma has announced the appointment of Dr. David Craig as the Interim Dean, pending approval from the OU Board of Regents. If approved, he will assume the role effective July 1, 2023.

The University Counseling Center provides comprehensive mental health services at OU. Its mission is to provide high-quality counseling and crisis intervention to our campus community members, consultation and outreach services to campus organizations, and training and supervision opportunities for emerging mental health clinicians. The center promotes the psychological well-being of all members of the university community. Counselors are available virtually from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The OU Writing Center is a pedagogical service that supports the writing development of all members of the OU and Norman community. The primary goal of our consultations is to help writers learn something they can use in the future.
