Gaylord Extra: April 2024

Going Over Giving Day

As we find ourselves a few weeks past OU’s Giving Day, I've had the chance to reflect on the incredible support shown by Gaylord College’s community. With each passing day, my gratitude has only deepened. It was a joy to witness the collective effort of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and donors coming together to champion our programs and students, and I take immense pride in the dedication and hard work exhibited by the team of students I had the privilege to collaborate with to make Giving Day a success. Their passion and commitment were evident in every aspect of our accomplishment, making the day not only impactful but also enjoyable.

Kari Watkins: Remembering 9:02: Reflections on the Oklahoma City Bombing and Its Aftermath

April 19, 2024

It’s Wednesday, April 19, 1995, 9:01 a.m. It’s a brisk, clear spring morning in Oklahoma City, and most people have just gotten to work. By 9:03, 168 people will have lost their lives, and Oklahoma City will have been changed forever. In the aftermath of the bombing outside of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, storytelling will have embarked on a new frontier that will change the way it is consumed, and those changes can still be seen today.

On March 12, 2024, Oklahomans came first. An HBO documentary that would evaluate the road to the most horrific act of home-grown terrorism premiered at Gaylord College in Norman, OK. In the year of the 29th anniversary since the Oklahoma City bombing, “An American Bombing: The Road to April 19” made its debut, not in L.A. or New York, but in Norman. The documentary examined the themes and events of the time periods leading up to April 19, 1995.

First Responders 29 Years Later

April 19, 2024

April 19th, 1995, was a day that changed Oklahoma forever. Most Oklahomans can remember exactly where they were at 9:02 a.m., a time that for any other day would pass. Where 168 people lost their lives and over 650 were injured. For those who died, their families, friends, colleagues, and their community lost someone. This was the day of the Murrah Building bombing in downtown Oklahoma City.
