Land Acknowledgement

The Student Government Association would like to honor and recognize the rich heritage and traditions of the land and its peoples on which we are gathered today.

Long before David Ross Boyd envisioned the University of Oklahoma, the land on which we gather today served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst many Indigenous peoples. Tribes such as the Caddo and Wichita and Affiliated tribes called this land home long before the University of Oklahoma was established. Today, 39 tribal nations dwell within the state of Oklahoma as a result of policies that were designed to assimilate Native people and strip them of their diverse and sacred cultures and traditions.

This land acknowledgment statement is a public expression of gratitude and honor for the people who have been living on and cultivating this land from time immemorial. Today, many Native people represent their families and tribes from across the land as Indigenous students, faculty and staff here at the University of Oklahoma.

The Student Government Association would like to acknowledge that today... We are visitors on this land. We are thankful for the privilege and opportunity to be visitors.
