During the 2023 American Meteorological Society’s annual meeting this month, Xuguang Wang, Ph.D., Presidential Research Professor and Robert Lowry Chair Professor in the School of Meteorology, received the 2023 Distinguished Scientific or Technological Accomplishment Award by the AMS Scientific and Technological Affairs Commission’s Committee on Weather Analysis and Forecasting.

“This AMS award is one of the most prestigious awards that the Society makes, and we are immensely proud of Professor Wang. Her accomplishments have been extraordinary, and they are recognized world-wide,” said Berrien Moore III, dean of the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences, Chesapeake Energy Corporation Chair in Climate Studies, and director of the National Weather Center.

The annual award is intended to recognize “an individual who has made significant contributions to the discipline and is well recognized within the discipline as being a science/technological leader… A nominee’s contributions must primarily be scientific in nature and must have had their greatest impact in the weather analysis and forecasting disciplines.”

Wang was selected “for advances in ensemble data and observation assimilation methods that have improved numerical weather prediction systems.”

“It is such a great honor to receive the American Meteorological Society Weather Analysis and Forecasting Distinguished Scientific/Technological Accomplishment Award during the AMS annual meeting at Denver, CO. It would not be possible without constant supports from my family, dedicated work from former and current OU MAP lab members, and helps from OU, colleagues and friends,” Wang said.

In addition to the award, Wang will give an invited talk during the 2023 AMS Weather Analysis and Forecasting/Numerical Weather Prediction conferences to be held at Madison, WI, later this year.
