Goodbye Letter

A Letter from Assistant Dean Yvette Walker

Bittersweet. The word evokes rich chocolate, not too syrupy or saccharine. Merriam-Webster defines it as “pleasure accompanied by suffering or regret.” It is the perfect word to describe how I feel about leaving Gaylord College and going back into the world of full-time journalism.

Does Superman bleed? Did Icarus sweat when he touched the sun? Did Theseus think about his mother before fighting the minotaur? It would be nice to know the heroes of our stories are just as fallible as us, to know that Hercules gets pimples just like the common folk, but that would remove the beauty of being human: hardship.

A Letter from Lee Reynolds

Little did I know that returning to my hometown and OU in 2015 – after being away 28 years – would be so rewarding. Thank you, Ed Kelley, for making that happen. After much deep reflection, and the passing of a best friend, I retired effective, May 15.

Message from the Dean

A Message from Dean Kelley

March 03, 2023

As many of you know, I am stepping down as dean of the college on June 30, the end of OU’s fiscal year, after eight years in the position. My reason for doing so is simple: the march of time. In my case, another milestone birthday (No. 70) awaits. As an alum of the program myself, I firmly believe Gaylord deserves a younger leader with new ideas and a fresh perspective to take it to even greater heights.

Interestingly, I almost went to OSU instead of OU. I was set and excited to attend until my mom pushed me to tour OU. I have talked about being a Sooner since I was a kid, but I thought it was too far out of reach. I toured the university and knew I needed to be here.
