Mission, Objectives & Student Outcomes

Our Mission

The mission of the School of Sustainable Chemical, Biological and Materials Engineering is to serve the changing needs of society through the training of outstanding engineers in the creation and utilization of chemical engineering knowledge.

ABET Accredited

Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and the Chemical, Biochemical, Biomolecular and Similarly Named Program Criteria.

Program Educational Objectives

Our chemical engineering undergraduate program is preparing our recent graduates to meet the following objectives:

  1. Graduates will perform successfully as professionals in businesses, industries, and government.
  2. Graduates will perform successfully in their pursuit of advanced degrees in chemical engineering and other technical or professional fields.
  3. Graduates will continually improve their professional competencies through further training or education.

Undergraduate Student Outcomes

(1)  an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics

(2)  an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors

(3)  an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences

(4)  an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts

(5)  an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives

(6)  an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions

(7)  an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

MS Student Outcomes

Outcome 1: Scholarship

The student will be able to conduct original research and assemble a creative new body of work in the fields spanned by SCBME and to effectively communicate this work to a technically literate audience. This will be assessed using the M.S. Thesis and Final Oral Examination.

Outcome 2: Mastery of Subject Material

The student will be able to think critically, creatively and to address technical problems in the fields spanned by SCBME.

This will be assessed through satisfactory completion of the graduate program of study and successful defense of their thesis.

Outcome 3Ethical Conduct Students will be educated in ethical and responsible conduct in research and professional activities.

This will be assessed through ethical completion of the M.S. Thesis and Final Oral Examination.

Ph.D. Student Outcomes

Outcome 1: Scholarship

The student will be able to identify and conduct original research resulting in a significant contribution to knowledge in the fields spanned by Sustainable Chemical, Biological, and Materials Engineering (SCBME) and to effectively communicate this work to a technically literate audience. This will be assessed using the Ph.D. Thesis and Final Oral Examination (“Defense”).

This will be assessed through the ethical completion of the Ph.D. Qualifier Examination and the Ph.D. Thesis and Final Oral Examination
