OU PhD candidate, Paul Calle Contreras, has won the Bullard Dissertation Completion Fellowship. The award is for doctoral candidates in the final phases of dissertation writing. Paul’s dissertation project is titled: “Healthcare innovations empowered by discriminative and generative artificial intelligence”. Paul developed deep learning models for surgical guidance based on Optical Coherence Tomography imaging data. These models were trained and benchmarked with hyperparameter optimization and nested cross-validation using high-performance computing. Paul also used few-shot learning with Large Language Models (LLMs) to generate smoking cessation intervention messages. Prompt engineering and decoding optimization were performed to improve the quality and diversity of the generated messages.
