Binbin Weng

Dr. Binbin Weng is an associate professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and holds the University’s Gerald Tuma Presidential Professorship. He hosts a joint faculty fellow position with OU’s Institute for Resilient Environmental & Energy Systems (IREES) and Data Institute for Societal Challenges (DISC). He also serves as the faculty director of the University’s Micro- and Nano- fabrication laboratories.

Dr. Weng’s group specializes in the study of light and matter interactions, with a major focus in the mid-infrared spectral region. He is a recipient of the National Science Foundation’s CAREER award to explore new states of light in the mid-infrared spectrum. He also spearheads a large cross-disciplinary team on campus on developing and deploying a new integrated methane emission monitoring/modeling platform for regional scale early detection of methane emission. Such transdisciplinary efforts have successfully led to close to $10M in funds from the Department of Energy and industrial partners.

Dr. Weng received his B.S. degree in Physics from Xiamen University, a master’s degree in Semiconductor Physics from Zhejiang University, and a PhD in ECE from the University of Oklahoma. He has published nearly 50 journal papers and 4 book chapters and holds multiple patent inventions. He is a member of OPTICA, SPIE and IEEE Photonics.

Dr. Weng's group focuses on both fundamental and applied nanophotonic research to study the advanced optical structures which include photonic crystals, plasmonic structures, and metamaterials. The purpose of such efforts is for advancing modern light applications in a broad range of areas such as thermal imaging, chemical sensing, wireless data communication, and renewable energy harvesting. Specific topics of recent interest include but not limited to:
