Zhisheng Shi

Professor Shi was born in Changchun, China. He received his MS degree in electrical engineering from Jilin University in China in 1987. He earned his PhD degree from physics department at the University of Freiburg in Germany in 1995.

Dr. Shi was a full-time research staff in Changchun Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Science from 1987 to 1992. He was awarded a scholarship from German Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1992. He worked at Fraunhofer Institute (FhG) of Physical Measurement Techniques (IpM) in Freiburg Germany while in parallel studying for his Ph.D. degree. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1995. He was a postdoctoral research staff at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich from 1995 to 1997. He took a faculty position in the school of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Oklahoma in 1997. He was honored as Gerald Tuma Presidential Professor in 2007.

The Opto-Electronic Research Group led by Dr. Shi at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering has been actively involved in the thin film semiconductor research.

Research Interests

  • Thin film semiconductor growth
Dr. Shi’s lab is equipped with three molecular-beam-epitaxy (MBE) chambers, and different wet-chemical synthesis tools.
  • Semiconductor mid-wave infrared (MWIR) lasers.
The group has pioneered the first IV-VI lead salt vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser, and IV-VI photonic crystal laser operating at room temperature.
  • Semiconductor MWIR detectors.
Dr. Shi’s team has clarified a nearly century-old ambiguity for Pb-salt photoconductors. As a result, his team demonstrated a record high specific detectivity (D*) for a PbSe mid-IR photoconductive (PC) detector at room temperature.
  • Solar cells.
Dr. Shi’s solar cell research includes lead-chalcogenide quantum dot (QD) solar cells and perovskite solar cells.
  • Nanophotonics.
Dr. Shi’s team has conducted research in ordered assembly of nano-structures, nano-structured coating, nanophotonic devices such as nanophotonic crystal devices, QD solar cells and QD photodetectors.
