In 2006, the Gallogly College of Engineering, and in turn, the University of Oklahoma was the FIRST university in the country to offer Lean/Six Sigma certification programs to our students and the second to offer these programs to professional and corporate employees.
The OU Gallogly College of Engineering, in conjunction with the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers, offers Green Belt-level certification workshops in both Lean and Six Sigma. Lean and Six Sigma are benchmark process improvement approaches for manufacturing and service, in both the public and private sectors. Many organizations in fields ranging from the energy sector, manufacturing, military, aerospace, government, and non-profit utilize Lean and Six Sigma tools for competitiveness, and highly value these certifications among job applicants. Certification in these areas indicate to potential employers that the practitioner has valuable insights, critical skills, and will be able to engage in roles that require independent thought and creative problem-solving.
All workshops offered are live and in-person. These classes are held on OU campus during breaks or intersession periods.
The Lean Green Belt workshop is typically offered the week after Spring Semester Finals Week (first week of summer). The Six Sigma Green Belt workshops are typically offered in the final week of summer: the week before Fall Semester begins. Participants are highly encouraged to complete both workshops
These workshops are extremely popular across campus among students, staff, and local professionals and always fill up quickly. Register early to qualify for early-bird discounts!
Enrollment is facilitiated through the IISE organization. Participants will need to create a (free) IISE account to enroll in either workshop.
Lean and Six Sigma at the OU Gallogly College of Engineering offers the following workshops:
Lean Green Belt Workshop (2.1 CEUs)
This three-day workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to Lean enterprise principles and practical strategies for implementation. Participants will gain a clear framework for managing Lean processes and driving continuous improvement within their organizations.
The course covers key concepts such as structuring teams to support Lean practices, implementing the 5S system on the plant floor, and initiating setup time reduction using the SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Dies) methodology.
Upon completion, participants will earn a Lean Green Belt certification, supported by the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE).
No prerequisites are required—students from all majors and professional backgrounds are encouraged to attend.
Six Sigma Green Belt Workshop (2.1 CEUs)
Six Sigma methods are powerful tools for boosting productivity and improving quality across operations. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to integrate business, statistical, and engineering principles to drive measurable improvements.
Participants will gain hands-on experience using the DMAIC process, root cause analysis, statistical tools, and more to identify, quantify, and address critical quality issues. You’ll learn to evaluate processes, determine probabilities of success or failure, and support continuous improvement efforts.
As a Six Sigma Green Belt, you’ll be equipped to lead and support Six Sigma initiatives within your organization. Graduates of this workshop will earn a Green Belt certification supported by the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers (IISE).
No prerequisites are required—students from all majors and professional backgrounds are encouraged to attend.
