On September 7th, 2024, Stewart (“Stu”) Ryan passed away after a long illness. Stu retired from the department of Physics and Astronomy in 2012 after 35 years as a faculty member. It is estimated that he taught the General Physics for Non-Science Majors to over 15,000 students, amounting to almost 15% of all undergraduates at OU. He was probably the best known scientist in Oklahoma, performing over 500 science demonstration shows as “Dr. Indestructo” at high schools and middle schools across the state. He worked tirelessly to improve science education standards as well. He leaves a legacy of an understanding and appreciation of science by thousands of students.
