ENST 3800: Environmental Internship lets you earn college credit for a planned, hands-on work experience related to personal, academic or career goals. An internship helps you explore career possibilities before graduation, acquire major and career-related work experience, apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom and gain insight from current professionals.

Amelia Landry is a double major in Environmental Studies and International Studies. She spent a summer interning with Gathering Place, a nonprofit-run riverfront park in Tulsa, Oklahoma. 

As the Operations intern, Amelia worked with the park’s facilities management, horticulture and custodial teams to conduct a time study to improve project efficiency. She also developed community education programs with Gathering Place’s sustainability committee.

Amelia said her Environmental Studies background set her apart when she applied for the internship.

“They could tell I was interested not just in their park specifically, but in how exposing children to nature and allowing them to have greenspaces really impacts their development and appreciation for the environment.”

In this position, Amelia found freedom to come up with her own project ideas. The systems-thinking approaches she learned in her classes prepared her to give better recommendations to the park.
