April 9 - From Unnatural Trade to Unnatural Empire: British Abolitionism and the Scramble for African Natural Resources

From Unnatural Trade to Unnatural Empire: British Abolitionism and the Scramble for African Natural Resources. How did eighteenth-century abolitionists inadvertently stimulate interest in Africa's natural resources? In this talk, taken from his forthcoming book The Unnatural Trade, Brycchan Carey will show how British, Swedish, and American abolitionists reached for popular collections of travelers' and naturalists' accounts of Africa to argue that the continent's animal, vegetable and mineral resources were of more value to the British economy than the trade in enslaved people. In so doing, however, they promoted a vision of Africa as a continent of abundant but underexploited natural resources and inadvertently fueled the sense that riches were to be had there. Apr. 20th, 2023 - Fighting Against Climate Change Today (FACCT)

On April 20th, 2023, Environmental Studies majors hosted a workshop on consumption and climate change. "Fighting Against Climate Change Today" highlighted how the choices we make in our everyday lives can change our carbon footprints.

Over the course of three sessions, attendees tested their knowledge of the "embedded carbon" in our food, sampled climate-friendly treats by a local coffee shop, and learned about the climate consequences of our personal transportation choices.

The F.A.C.C.T. workshop was organized by the Environmental Studies Learning Community class, which is part of the core curriculum for the Environmental Studies major.
