Undergraduate Writers

Whether you're a first-year student, a transfer student, someone returning to school after being gone for a while, or a senior-- the Writing Center is here to help you. The Writing Center works with writers in any course, at any level, at any stage of the writing process. This means we're here to help with your First-Year Composition papers and your Senior Capstone, and we're here to help you with your science final papers as well as your applications to medical or graduate school.

The Writing Center offers three main types of services for Undergraduate Writers:

  1. Individual and group consultations
  2. Workshops, writing retreats, and writing camps
  3. Writing resource guides and materials

We also have resources related to publishing on this page below.

Read through the descriptions below to learn more about how the Writing Center can help you.

Appointments

Our appointments are available to all students at OU. One-on-one consultations are a great way to ask questions about and get help with concerns you have about your own individual writing. Whether you're working on a paper for a general education course, like First-Year Composition or History, or writing a capstone paper for a senior seminar, consultations are a great way to get feedback as you write.

We expect all students to be aware of the level of help, if any, they may receive on a given assignment. If you are unsure of whether or not you should be receiving help on a project, exam, or essay, ask your instructor.

Events and Workshops

Many of the events at the Writing Center provide skills and advice on topics that may be helpful to undergraduate students as you learn and grow throughout your journey at OU. These topics can range from citation style resources, to specific genres of academic writing, to grammar and mechanics. We also offer events related to graduate school applications and job materials when you are nearing the completion of your time at OU.

The Writing Center offers several events each semester specific to courses you may take to fulfill general education requirements at OU. These include:

  • First-Year Composition Write Nights for ENGL 1113 and 1213
  • History Write Nights for HIST 1483 and 1493
  • Gateway to Belonging Write Nights for UCOL 1523

Be sure to check our calendar for updated event dates and times each semester.

Writing Resources

The Writing Center offers writing resources for use by everyone. Some resources focus on grammar-related topics while others focus on larger writing issues. Downloadable (PDF) resources include:

  • Citation style guides created by the OU WC (APA, MLA, and Chicago)
  • Handouts on outlining, proofreading, and setting SMART writing goals

Head to our YouTube Channel for captioned video content on writing-related topics as well. We have video tutorials on:

  • APA citation style
  • Using inclusive pronouns in writing
  • Parts of speech

Are you looking to publish your writing?

There are many outlets for publishing a completed undergraduate research paper or a creative writing project at the University of Oklahoma. Some are discipline-specific while others are couse-specific. There are also a number of places beyond the University that students can publish. See below for a list of known opportunities.
