If so, consider applying to work in the OU Writing Center. We hire graduate and undergraduate students from all areas of study to coach and collaborate with others as they write and to serve as office assistants to help keep things running.

The Writing Center typically hires each spring for the following fall semester. Occassionally, we have positions available at other times. Contact the Writing Center for more information or check back to our website in the spring.

About the OU Writing Center

The OU Writing Center (write.ou.edu) is a pedagogical service that supports the writing development of both graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Oklahoma. Our services are also open to members of the Oklahoma City/Norman community. The Writing Center provides support through one-on-one and group consultations, workshops, writing camps, and other writing-based programming. The primary goal of the Center is to help writers learn something they can use in the future. Our staff draws on scholarship from Writing Center Studies, Writing Studies, and Higher Education to provide feedback that is thoughtful, intentional, and useful. The Writing Center encourages writers to make regular use of its services and to join our staff in meaningful conversations about writing.

About the Position

Undergraduate Writing Consultants at the OU Writing Center support the work of the Writing Center, the University, and the students of the University of Oklahoma. Through this work, Writing Consultants help to fulfill the missions of 1) providing broad writing support for undergraduate students, graduate students, and the local community; and 2) creating visibility for the OU Writing Center across campus.

Writing Consultants provide support for the OU writing community both face-to-face and online. The position offers multiple opportunities for professional development, as consultants may assist with special projects, develop and lead workshops, work with community organizations, and present at academic conferences.

Requirements:

Undergraduate Writing Consultants must be currently enrolled undergraduate students at the University of Oklahoma Norman Campus and must hold a status of sophomore or higher and/or have completed two semesters of college-level courses.

The OU Writing Center welcomes and encourages applications from students in a variety of academic disciplines and from different racial, ethnic, and language backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Consult with writers through appointments, drop-ins, and other consultation formats.
  • Assist with special projects and events as assigned.
  • Promote the Writing Center through class visits and campus events as assigned.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and consultant education.

Compensation:

Starting pay for this position is $13.00 per hour. Consultants may be eligible for reappointment and annual raises based on yearly evaluations. Limited summer employment opportunities are also available for existing consultants.

Writing consultants work an average of 10 hours per week and may work up to 20 hours per week. Schedules are built based on Writing Center needs and individual consultant availability.

Students with work study awards are encouraged to apply, but work study is not required.

Graduate Consultants at the OU Writing Center support the work of the Writing Center, the University, and the students of the University of Oklahoma. Graduate Consultants work 10 or 20 hours per week in a .25 or .50 assistantship. Graduate students provide writing support through face-to-face and online services. The position offers students multiple opportunities for professional development as graduate consultants may develop and lead pedagogical workshops and other Writing Center events, assist with Writing Center promotion, engage in assessment and research, and present at academic conferences. 

Requirements

Currently enrolled or incoming graduate student at the University of Oklahoma. Must be enrolled full-time in an eligible degree program. 

The OU Writing Center welcomes and encourages applications from students in a variety of academic disciplines and from different racial, ethnic, and language backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Consult with OU writers through appointments, drop-ins, and other consultation formats.
  • Plan and facilitate workshops, events, and other programming for OU students and community members.
  • Assist Director and/or Associate Director with projects as assigned. 
  • Promote the Writing Center through class visits and social media as assigned.
  • Mentor new and undergraduate consultants.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and consultant education.

Compensation

The OU Writing Center offers .25 and .50 assistantships. Both positions are 9-month assistantships with a bi-weekly stipend. The .50 assistantship includes a full tuition waiver and graduate health insurance for eligible programs of study.

.25 assistantship:

  • 10 hours per week
  • $433.85 bi-weekly stipend for master’s students
  • $450 bi-weekly stipend for doctoral students

.50 assistantship

  • 20 hours per week
  • $867.70 bi-weekly stipend for master’s students
  • $900 bi-weekly stipend for doctoral students
  • Tuition waiver & graduate health insurance

Reappointment is based on annual evaluations. Limited summer funding opportunities are also available for existing consultants.

About the Position

Office Assistants help perform the administrative support work of the OU Writing Center. The position offers opportunities for professional development and engagement with programs across campus. OAs are also afforded time to work on their own studies when not completing assigned tasks. 

Qualifications:

Required Education: Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student for the semester at the University of Oklahoma. Hiring is contingent upon verification of current student status.

Work study awards are required for this position. Pay starts at $13/hour.

Skills and Responsibilities:

  • Greet writers and assist with appointment scheduling
  • Perform light cleaning duties as assigned
  • Perform office/clerical work, including: answering telephones, utilizing multiple computer programs, and possessing copier knowledge
  • Ability to create and manipulate Microsoft Office files, especially Word and Excel.
