Crime Reporting and Prevention

Incidents of rape, acquaintance rape and other sexual offenses (forcible or non-forcible) should be reported immediately to the OU-Tulsa Police Department if the offense occurred on the OU-Tulsa campus. 

Please call the Tulsa Police Department  if the offense occured off-campus.

Prompt reporting will help ensure the preservation of evidence and appropriate medical treatment. The police department will provide law enforcement and investigative services as requested by the victim.

Reports can also be made to the University, which can provide administrative assistance to victims of sex offenses and take disciplinary action against the offender, up to and including expulsion or termination, under the University's Sexual Misconduct, Discrimination and Harassment Policy found at http://www.ou.edu/content/eoo/policies.html.

An act relating to the Oklahoma Sex Offenders Registration Act; amending 57 O.S. 2001, Section 583, which relates to registration of convicted sex offenders with local law enforcement; modifying certain definition to include security and police of institutions of higher learning; expanding duties of the Department of Corrections to inform sex offenders of certain requirements; amending 57 O.S. 2001, Section 584, which relates to notification, disclosure of registry and duty to register; including requirement to collect information about enrollment and employment at schools; expanding certain definition to include security or police departments of institutions of higher learning; modifying language; and declaring an emergency. This amendment would require any person who becomes subject to the provisions of the Sex Offenders Registration Act, on or after November 1, 1989, shall be registered if the person:

• Enrolls as a full-time or part-time student.
• Is a full-time or part-time employee at an institution of higher learning, or
• Resides or intends to reside or stay on any property owned or controlled by the institution of higher learning.

Among the provisions of this statute is a requirement for each local law enforcement agency (to include campus security) to make its sex offender registry available upon request, without restriction, at a cost that is no more than what is charged for other records provided by the law enforcement agency pursuant to the Open Records Act. The campus community will be notified by the OU-Tulsa Police Department as registrations are received.

Presently there is no charge for a copy of the registry at the Schusterman Center.

Sex offender information is made available to the public pursuant to Oklahoma Law, which requires all convicted sex offenders to register their current address with the local law enforcement agency. The law requires agencies to make that information available to the public.

The Oklahoma Department of Corrections provides a Sex Offender Registry for public viewing at the following web address: https://sors.doc.state.ok.us/svor/f?p=105:1: and the national registry at http://www.nsopr.gov/. Information on federal prisons can be viewed at http://www.bop.gov. Please remember that only offenders convicted after November 1999 will be included in the sex offender registries.

• Person(s) loitering about at unusual hours and locations.
• Person(s) running, especially if the person is carrying something of value.
• Person(s) exhibiting unusual mental or physical symptoms. They could be under the influence of drugs or needing medical or psychiatric assistance.
• Person(s) carrying property that might be suspicious, depending on the circumstances.
• Person(s) going from room to room trying door knobs.
• Person(s) going from door to door trying to gain access into a building.
• Open or broken doors or windows.
• Unusual noises-anything suggestive of foul play, danger or illegal activity.
• Person(s) sitting in parked vehicles for an extended period of time.
• Vehicles driving slowly in a parking lot at night.

What should you do?

• DO NOT physically confront a suspicious person.
• DO NOT let anyone into a locked room/building.
• DO NOT block the person's access to an exit.
• Call OU-Tulsa Police at 918-660-3333.

• DO NOT touch or disturb the object or package.
• Evacuate the area immediately.
• Call the OU-Tulsa Police Department at 918-660-3333.
• Follow instructions from emergency personnell.

• Report to your supervisor.
• Report to the OU-Tulsa Police Department at 918-660-3333.

Telephone harassment is both a nuisance and a crime. If you are a victim of telephone harassment, follow the steps outlined below:

1. As soon as you realize the nature of the call, look on the caller ID if available. Write down the phone number indicated on the caller ID. HANG UP. Remain calm and replace the receiver on the telephone as you would for any call.

2. DO NOT talk or try to discover the caller's identity.

3. If calling persists, or if any call is obscene or threatening, call the OU-Tulsa Police Department. If off campus, call the agency within the jurisdiction you live in and report the activity.

4. If calling persists, keep a time log of calls received, what was said by all parties, and a description of the voice.

5. Notify Campus Security at 918-660-3333 or the Tulsa Police Department.

• Lock your door whenever you leave your office for ANY length of time.
• Secure your vehicle. Close all windows and lock doors.
• Never prop open any door.
• Protect all valuables in your office, such as wallets, jewelry, credit cards, cash and computers. Do not leave valuables or cash in plain view.
• Protect your books and put your name in them. Do not leave them in public places.
• Do not loan your keys to anyone.
• Never put your name or address on your key rings.
• Take all valuable items home with you during vacations.
• When in a public place, keep valuable possessions out of sight. If you must leave an area for any length of time, take personal items with you.
• Promptly report any thefts so a thorough investigation can be performed.
