2020 Karla Lane Community Kindness Award Presented to Vicky Winkelman
Dr. David Kendrick with the Department of Medical Informatics announced the winner of the 4th annual Karla Lane Community Kindness Staff Award: Vicky Winkelman, Sr. Account Clerk for the Department of Pediatrics in the College of Medicine.
In her nomination, Vicky is described as a person with a “strong personal faith and servant attitude”. She values and cares for every person she comes in contact. She takes extra care to check in with co-workers who might be having a bad day and takes the time to learn about co-workers, residents and faculty and helps celebrate their life events. Vicky starts each day with greeting each person and enjoys sharing small tokens of joy – such as chocolates or hand written thank you cards.
This award was developed to memorialize someone who meant a lot to the OU-Tulsa community and to encourage employees to demonstrate the same positive qualities that Karla Lane possessed.
Karla worked for the University of Oklahoma Department of Medical Informatics Clinical Information Systems team for 7 years. She was someone who, despite her own 2.5 year battle with breast cancer, always asked about and cared for others. Karla was compassionate, extremely kind and gentle, modest, patient with others and incredibly brave. She had a special love of animals and cars, and enjoyed spending time with her family and contributing to her community. While Karla’s personal traits are something we encourage all to exemplify, she was also a dedicated employee. Karla was analytical, collaborative, diligent, flexible, efficient, effective, and had a great eye for detail. In both her personal and professional life, she had a great attitude and was genuine in all she did. Karla is missed by many and it is our goal to honor her memory by encouraging some of those same traits that were so important to her.
