Volunteer Faculty
The School of Community Medicine relies on volunteer faculty to help with many aspects of education for learners. Volunteers include community physician preceptors, researchers, and other professionals who meet the qualifications for a faculty appointment and who are willing to contribute their time and effort to the education of future physicians and physician assistants.
Benefits of a Volunteer Appointment
Volunteers are invited to participate in University ceremonies and events, as appropriate for the volunteer's role. Benefits offered by academic departments vary. Most departments invite volunteers to departmental events and meetings, including Grand Rounds and other CME opportunities.
Expectations of Volunteer Faculty
Volunteer faculty may be asked to help teach, supervise, and/or advise SCM students as well as residents & fellows in graduate medical education programs. Expectations may vary by department according to each departments' needs.
The College of Medicine requires volunteers to adhere to the following policies:

- COM Policy 416 - Guidelines for the Teacher-Learner Relationship & Professionalism Attributes
- COM Policy 417 - Medical Student Mistreatment
When a volunteer faculty member ability to serve changes, the volunteer is expected to notify the academic department Chair. If the change means the volunteer can no longer support educational activities, the volunteer should resign his/her faculty appointment.
