Information for High School Students

Club Scrubs

Club Scrubs will be hosted in person at the Schusterman Center for the 2023-2024 academic year!

Club Scrubs is a hands on, exciting, interactive club for high school students interested in exploring health careers. Students will have the opportunity to hear from OU Tulsa, SCM and local community health care professionals, receive mentoring from our current medical doctor and physician associate students and participate in new programs, simulations, demonstrations and activities. The program is free to all high school students that attend. 

Meets twice monthly 5:30-7:00pm CST on Tuesdays at the OU Tulsa Schusterman Center.  Meeting information and location will be sent via email to registered participants the day before the meeting. If you do not receive an email from us, please contact via email at tulsascm@ouhsc.edu or 918-660-3500. 

Club Scrubs 2023 - 2024 Session Dates - session information details will be sent the day before each meeting.

Register HERE for the 2023 - 2024 academic year of Club Scrubs. If you previously registered (this academic year) you do not have to re-register. 

All participants must have a current (this academic year) and completed Minors on Campus Form before attending a Club Scrubs session. 

Important: Parents and/or guardians please make sure you are signing the form with an electronic signature or please print the form and sign. 2024 MASH Camp & Mini MASH Camp

MASH Camp (Math and Science in Health Careers) is a 4 day camp during the summer for students currently in 9th - 12th grades. Students participate in learning about health careers through a series of stimulating, hands-on learning activities in mathematics, science, and multidisciplinary studies. 

When: June 17th - 20th 
Where: Tulsa SCM Campus

Mini MASH Camp

For students that have completed 7th and 8th grade! 

Like MASH Camp (Math and Science in Health Careers) is a 3 and a half day camp during the summer for students who have completed 7th & 8th grades. Students participate in learning about health careers through a series of stimulating, hands-on learning activities in mathematics, science, and multidisciplinary studies. 

When: July 8th - 11th

OU-Tulsa Explore Health Care: High School Career Day

This event takes place once a semester on the OU-Tulsa Schusterman Campus, usually in November. Open to high school juniors and seniors who are considering a career in a healthcare profession, participants interact with current students, providing the opportunity to learn about different healthcare career options. OU colleges of Nursing, Medicine, Allied Health and Pharmacy participate. Dates and times to be announced.

Types of Healthcare Careers

There are many different types of careers in the healthcare industry.  Below is a list of just a few of the possible careers that are available to those looking to join the ever growing healthcare industry.

Tips for High School Students Interested in Healthcare

In terms of general tips for those looking for pursue a career in the healthcare industry, we have compiled this list to give you the major things to focus on during high school.

1.     Understand that training in the healthcare industry is not a quick and easy process and can be very challenging and lengthy for certain professions

2.     Realize that your studies RIGHT NOW are important - plan your courses to focus on science and math

3.     Take every opportunity to improve your test taking skills

4.     Meet with your guidance counselor and talk to those currently working in healthcare

5.     Shadow or volunteer - many hospitals and clinics will require you to be 18 but check with family physicians or family friends in the healthcare field about possible shadowing opportunities. Don't be discouraged if you can't find shadowing opportunities while in high school as you will find many more opportunities once you are an undergraduate student.

6.     Stay up to date on the medical field

While Healthcare jobs vary drastically, many of them will require a strong knowledge base in both science and math.  When considering what courses to take during high school you should take as many science and math courses as you can.

  • Statistics

Undergraduate Information 

Students interested in the healthcare field should start by planning for their undergraduate education.  Most health professions programs require students to obtain specific prerequisite courses before applying.   Those courses can be obtained as part of bachelor's degree program at the University of Oklahoma.  Contact your rep today to learn more or set up a tour.

The Association of American Medical Colleges is a fantastic resource for Pre-Medicine and current Medical Students.  Their Aspiring Physicians section is very helpful for those planning to become a physician or physician assistant.

Another great resource is the American Medical Association. Their website offers information on preparing for, applying to and paying for medical school. The FAQ section is also a very helpful resource.
