Research Training and Development

In addition to pre-award and post award research administration, the Office of Research Services (ORS) provides in-person, online, and recorded training events for faculty and staff. The goal of these training opportunities is to provide information, examples, and other resources to assist researchers in developing more competitive proposals and growing the OU research enterprise.

The upcoming and recorded training events listed below include workshops sponsored by the Office of Research Services, often in collaboration with other OU offices, as well as events and videos from external organizations. Click on a tab for a description of the event, to register for an event, or to view recorded training sessions.

According to the federal requirements, all investigators at OU funded through the Public Health Service of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (PHS-funded) must complete the online FCOI training. Successful completion of the training is required prior to the expenditure of funds on any newly-funded projects, including noncompeting continuation awards. This applies to all PHS-sponsored research projects as of August 24, 2012. Training must be completed at least every four years. Current PHS awards are not subject to these new requirements until the noncompeting continuation is awarded.

For a list of PHS organizations and additional FCOI information, go to Conflict of Interest or contact Amy Moakley at VPRFCOI@ou.edu.

To complete the CITI conflict of interest training module, register here.

The responsible and ethical conduct of research (RECR) is critical for excellence as well as public trust in science and engineering. Consequently, education in RECR is considered essential in the preparation of future scientists and engineers. The responsible and ethical conduct of research involves not only a responsibility to generate and disseminate knowledge with rigor and integrity, but also a responsibility to:

  1. conduct peer review with the highest ethical standards;
  2. diligently protect proprietary information and intellectual property from inappropriate disclosure; and
  3. treat students and colleagues fairly and with respect.

The Office of Research Services will directly comply with the federal regulations in response to the 2007 COMPETES act. This act states that undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers participating in an awarded research project that was proposed on or after January 4, 2010 will be required to attend the RCR training.

For those supported by NSF, complete the online CITI training, which provides information on core topics to consider in efforts to conduct research in a responsible manner. Instruction for registration and requirements for undergraduates and for graduate students/postdocs can be found in here:

If you are required to complete RCR training because of support through the NIH or an adjacent agency, or if you need additional information, contact Cindy Clark at ris@ou.edu.

NSF has updated its Proposals & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG), effective October 4, 2021. Along with clarifications, there are significant changes that include reasonable accommodation, biosketches, and current and other support.

The training session, NSF Update: Significant Changes to the PAPPG (22-1), provides faculty and staff with information about the changes involved and the impact they may have on researchers.

NIH has issued an updated Data Management and Sharing (DMS) policy (effective January 25, 2023) to promote the sharing of scientific data.  Under the DMS policy, NIH expects investigators and institutions to plan and budget for the managing and sharing of data, submit a DMS plan for review when applying for funding, and comply with the approved DMS plan.

The training session, NIH Data Management, and Sharing Policy Update, provides faculty and staff with information about the policy requirements, data repositories, and budgeting for a DMS plan.
