Nomination to the council is made by the director of the school, in cooperation with the executive committee of the council and council members.
Membership is a term of four years and timing of appointments are such that members serve in overlapping tenures, with one-fourth of the membership terminating each year. Members are limited to two years, to be ineligable for at least one year before considersation for another term, except by special ruling of the executive committee.
The executive committee of the council is made up of the following: chair, vice-chair, secretary, six directors, School of Geosciences director and past chairmen. Directors serve two-year terms with elections staggered so that three directors assume office and three directors retire from the executive committee each year.
