Graduate Programs

The School of Geosciences offers four graduate degrees:

Master of Science in Geology
Master of Science in Geophysics
Doctor of Philosophy in Geology
Doctor of Philosophy in Geophysics

Our graduate degrees require students to complete courses in their area of specialization and conduct original research projects that will result in a Thesis (M.S.) or Dissertation (Ph.D.). While in the graduate program, students are under the advisement of one of our 20 full-time, Ph.D.-holding faculty members.

Along with their degree work, most of our students participate in the various opportunities through the School of Geosciences to network with future employers. The School hosts numerous companies each year that provide recruitment and presentation opportunities for our graduate students which result in internships and full-time careers.

Considering OU for Graduate Studies?

As you consider your graduate studies, it is important to contact faculty members in the area you are interested in studying. Some students are very settled on a specific field of study; if this describes you, contact the faculty in that particular area. Other students, however, may be interested in several areas and so you should contact multiple faculty in those different fields. Either way, by contacting specific faculty, you can learn about their most current research projects, the potential of funding, and whether they are accepting new students—and they will get to know you as well.

AGU Bridge Program

The School of Geosciences is proud to become an AGU Bridge partner institute, joining a network of national doctoral-granting institutions committed to the principles underlying the Bridge Program. The AGU Bridge Program was launched in 2019 to increase the number of underrepresented minority (URM) students (defined in this project as African American, Hispanic American, and Native American) in earth and space science graduate programs. Prospective URM graduate students can visit the AGU Bridge program website (https://www.agu.org/bridge-program) or reach out to Dr. Junle Jiang at jiang@ou.edu for more details.
