Single Cell Genomics Lab

The Single Cell Genomics (SCG) lab is equipped with a high-resolution confocal Raman microscope system. The Raman spectroscopic technique is used to observe vibrational, rotational, and other low-frequency modes in a system. This microscope system provides fully automated scanning and fluorescence imaging to allow flexible Raman range selection and spectroscopy. One of the greatest challenges in single cell genomics is to identify singles cells for subsequent sequencing. Single cell Raman spectroscopy is a non-invasive and label-free technology allowing in vivo and multiple parameter analysis of individual living cells for sequencing. A cell sorting system specifically designed for use with this system will be used to collect cells of interest for subsequent sequencing.

The SCG lab is equipped with an air shower and an enclosed clean room housing the Raman microscope system to minimize contamination.

The LabRAM is a high sensitivity single spectrograph that allows for fast generation of Raman spectra of indiviual microbial cells.  Raman spectroscopy allows for non-destructive, non-invasive, information-rich analysis without the need for sample preparation.  The LabRAM HR provides spectral coverage from visible to near infrared, resolution of 0.35 cm-1/pixel and confocal point analysis.
