Provoking Genius: William “Bill” Murphy, 1940-2022

University of Oklahoma alumnus William “Bill” Earl Murphy was an accomplished architect and designer who helped introduce the visionary spirit of Oklahoma’s American School to New York and whose inventive work was frequently featured in The New York Times.

Herb Greene to be Inducted into Gibbs Hall of Fame

The University of Oklahoma Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture Hall of Fame recognizes a select number of high-character individuals who have made a significant and lasting positive impact over time to Gibbs College, its students, staff, faculty, alumni, and/or to communities across the globe. The impact may have been, or continues to be, in the form of service and mentorship, sustained professional excellence, and/or advancement and financial support. Herb Greene is part of the 2023 Hall of Fame class.

Alumni Feature: Michael D’Amico

Michael D’Amico graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1961, where he studied in the American School under Bruce Goff and Herb Greene. He went on to establish D’Amico & Associates in San Francisco. His firm has taken part in the design of several impressive projects around the world. Eventually he would be joined by other OU alumni at his firm, including Jerry Anderson, George Newman and Dave Armstrong.

OU American School Architect to Exhibit ‘Collage Thinking’ at MAINSITE Contemporary Art

Norman, OK – MAINSITE Contemporary Art is honored to host an exhibition of works by architect and visual artist Herb Greene. The event marks the first solo exhibition of Greene’s work in Norman, where he studied architecture under Bruce Goff at the University of Oklahoma in the 1950s and built the iconic Prairie House in 1962.

George Kaye “Mickey” Muennig was born in Joplin, Missouri. Muennig transferred from Georgia Tech to the University of Oklahoma after seeing a travelling exhibition of Oklahoma student work.

The “Renegades: Bruce Goff and the American School of Architecture” exhibition, a collaboration of the Gibbs College of Architecture and Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art, recently received a favorable review in the Journal of Architectural Education by architectural historian Dr. Elizabeth Keslacy.

“Renegades” Opening Celebrated at Fred Jones on Jan. 23rd, 2020

The “Renegades: Bruce Goff and the American School of Architecture” exhibition opened at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art in Norman on January 23, 2020, drawing more than 380 attendees for a reception and panel discussion. The exhibition explores the history and influence of the American School of Architecture at the University of Oklahoma through archival materials, student work, and digital renderings of Bruce Goff–designed residences.

“Renegades at Fred Jones” Opens Jan. 24, 2020

NORMAN – “A new school, probably the only indigenous one in the United States” is how the architect Donald MacDonald described Bruce Goff and Herb Greene’s influence on the University of Oklahoma School of Architecture from 1947 through the 1960s. These architects transformed the ways architecture was learned, taught and practiced, creating a uniquely American approach to design now documented in an archive at the University of Oklahoma Libraries and on display in an upcoming exhibition at Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.

Gibbs College of Architecture is proud to have taken part in the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale as a part of the “Time Space Existence” collateral event hosted by the European Cultural Center (ECC). The Venice Architecture Biennale has been the most important international exhibition venue for contemporary architecture for nearly 50 years.
