OU Architecture Student Journal Earns National Recognition

The University of Oklahoma Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture has earned national recognition with its student-produced journal Telesis, which has been awarded the 2025 Douglas Haskell Award for Student Journals by the Center for Architecture in New York City.

OU Journal Receives 2025 Douglas Haskell Award for Student Journals

Telesis, a journal produced by students and faculty in the University of Oklahoma Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture, has earned first-place with the 2025 Douglas Haskell Award for Student Journals for its sixth volume, “The Essence.”

University of Oklahoma Student Studying Indigenous Homes in Ecuadorian Amazon

Luis Felipe Flores Garzón learned more than he expected from his initial fieldwork with three Indigenous Achuar communities in the Ecuadorian Amazon last summer. Flores Garzón, a doctoral candidate in the planning, design, and construction program of the Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture at the University of Oklahoma, is studying the Jea, a traditional house for 91 Achuar communities in this rainforest setting.

OU Architecture Faculty Co-Organizing “International Conference on Heritage and Affect” in Fall 2023

The International Conference of Heritage and Affect, co-organized by Angela Person (associate professor of Architecture, University of Oklahoma) and Jacque Micieli-Voutsinas (assistant professor of Museum Studies, University of Florida), will take place online in late November and early December 2023. The conference brings together dozens of leading scholars from around the world to explore the affective, visceral, and more-than-representational atmospheres of heritage landscapes.

Gibbs Ph.D. Student Presents at International Geographic Union Conference

Third-year Ph.D. student Felipe Flores was recently invited to speak at the Thematic Conference of the International Geographic Union. The conference took place in Mexico City from Aug. 18-25 and featured various sub-thematic sessions, speakers, excursions and workshops. Flores participated in the panel “Local and Urban Governance: lessons from the past and perspectives for resilient and sustainable development in a time of global emergencies and transitions.”

Gibbs Ph.D. Student Completes Summer Internship at DLZ Corporation

This summer, third-year Ph.D. student Felipe Flores served as an architectural associate at DLZ Corporation. DLZ is one of the leading consulting firms within the realms of architecture, engineering and surveying. It currently occupies the 139th spot on Engineering-News Record’s esteemed list of the Top 500 Design Firms in the United States. Additionally, it stands as the 11th largest firm in the Midwest, boasting a workforce of over 800 individuals spread across 29 offices.

Telesis “Adaptive Practice” (Vol. V) Now Available!

Telesis, the Gibbs College of Architecture’s award-winning student journal, is releasing its fifth edition in Fall 2023. This edition, “Adaptive Practice,” called for contributions from interdisciplinary problem solvers who reject the status quo and redefine “business as usual” through their work.

Gibbs College Ph.D. Student Honored with OU Graduate Teaching Award

Gibbs College PhD student Felipe Flores was recently honored with the University of Oklahoma Graduate Teaching Assistant Award in the “Humanities and Fine Arts” category. The Graduate Teaching Assistant Award recognizes and rewards outstanding performance by graduate students in both the “Humanities and Fine Arts” and “Science and Engineering” categories.

Gibbs College PhD student Felipe Flores recently won the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) Excellence in Teaching Award. MAGS is an organization of colleges and universities that works to advance graduate studies by improving program standards, sharing information, and encouraging research.

Telesis Journal Announces 2022 Call for Submissions on Theme “Adaptive Practice”

Telesis is the student-led journal at the University of Oklahoma Gibbs College of Architecture. Following its last volume, “Habitation” (Vol. IV), the Telesis team is considering the theme of “Adaptive Practice” in its forthcoming volume (Vol. V). Contributors may be students, faculty, professionals, or community members from inside and outside the University of Oklahoma.

PhD Student Receives ARCC King Medal

Felipe Flores, a PhD Student in Planning, Design, and Construction under the advisement of Dr. Angela Person, was recently awarded the Architectural Research Centers Consortium’s (ARCC) 2022 King Medal for the University of Oklahoma. The King Medal, named in honor of the late Jonathan King, is awarded to one student per ARCC member institution. Recipients are selected at the discretion of member institutions based on criteria that acknowledges innovation, integrity, and scholarship in architectural and/or environmental design research.

Telesis, the Gibbs College of Architecture’s award-winning student journal, is releasing its fourth edition in Fall 2022. This edition, “Habitation,” questions how we may ensure all things, living and non-living, may continue to inhabit our planet. “Habitation” continues the overarching theme explored in “Isolation”: “How can design aid people’s sense of belonging?”
