Graduate Students FAQ

No. Our program takes a holistic approach to each application. While GRE scores are welcome as supplemental material, their inclusion or exlusion does not affect admissions decisions.

To apply to the master’s program at the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication, please provide the following by using the online admissions portal:

  • Resume
  • General OU graduate application
  • TOEFL (non-native English speakers only)
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • 50 page writing sample (MPW applicants only)
  • Letter of Intent

We do not require a separate application for admission to the program. However, those applying for graduate assistantships should submit additional materials.  Please contact Graduate Advisor Leslie Cermak (lcermak@ou.edu) for more information about materials and deadlines.

Yes, it is possible to be admitted on a conditional coursework deficiency basis. This means that you would take the deficiency courses at the same time as you begin your graduate level courses. You would have to complete these courses within your first few semesters as a graduate student.

No, your references may just write a formal business letter and submit it directly to the Graduate Admissions office or mail to:

Office of Graduate Admissions

No, you can upload your materials one piece at a time if you need to. The GRE scores should be sent directly to the college after testing. The general OU graduate application, once complete, will also be sent directly to the college.

As long as you turn in a writing sample of 50 consecutive pages, no specific format is required.

Our traditional master’s programs are in-person. While an occasional course may be offered via video conference, it is not possible to complete the programs online.

For busy professionals with three years’ work experience in strategic communication or a related field, we offer an M.A. in Strategic Communication and Digital Strategy with OU Online. Visit https://www.ou.edu/online/programs/graduate/strat-comm to learn more about this five-semester program.
