Thomas Patten is an assistant professor of advertising in the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Oklahoma. He has more than 15 years’ experience as an advertising copywriter, associate creative director (ACD) and has served as the copywriting instructor in the Gaylord College’s advertising creative sequence since the 2018-19 academic year. Prior to his academic career, Thomas worked in advertising agencies large and small from Cole & Weber, Portland to McKee, Wallwork, Cleveland in Albuquerque to BOHAN Ideas in Nashville. Most recently he wrote for the in-house agency at Garmin in Kansas City.
His research interests include the role outsiders play in society, and in the advertising industry and their outsized role in the fine- and communication-arts. He has won a few industry honors along the way, from ADDY gold and Judge’s Choice awards to the ONE Show in NYC. In his creative off-time, Thomas writes about how ‘normal’ life is in Oklahoma is and how ‘unusual’ life is in Oklahoma. Two different subjects.
