Why the Entrepreneur Society?
Most children want to grow up to determine the work they will do with their hands, set their own goals, reap the rewards of their labors, make their own hours, be their own boss, start their own business - but most adults never do.
You came to college because you had great visions for your life and great things you wanted to accomplish even if you were still deciding what those things would be. Attending classes and getting a degree are usually only a small part of achieving those dreams. However, many people find themselves walking the well-trodden paths from high school to college to careers without ever stopping to check if they were headed in the right direction. Sometimes those are the very paths to the dreams they had for their lives. But many times, they are not.
Not everyone will be able to find the passion of their lives in the ventures of others. Sometimes the only way to accomplish your goals is to go your own way. We exist to help you.
What is entrepreneurship?
Entrepreneurship is a big concept. It isn't explained just by corporations or big business. If you start with a very broad concept of business, say that, "business is the activities, services, products, and interactions people create to develop resources to meet their wants and needs" then entrepreneurship just might fit inside it. For then, entrepreneurship is freedom, creativity, and opportunity in business. It is the great frontier of business, with all the risks and rewards that frontiers bring. It is deciding where you want to go and how you want to get there.
Who can be an entrepreneur?
The Entrepreneur Society is open to all students at the University of Oklahoma who are interested in starting their own enterprise. That venture can be a small home business, a large corporation, or a not-for-profit charity that works to better the world - whatever you feel you were called to do.
Whether you are a seasoned entrepreneur, thinking about starting a business, or are hearing the word for the first time we would be honored to have you join us. Whether you want to start a publishing firm, a rocket design company, or a dance studio we would appreciate your involvement. All majors, all people, all welcome.
What does the Entrepreneur Society believe in?
We believe in the golden rule. Treating others as you wish to be treated, and treating all men as your neighbors is a good way to approach anything. Peoples' actions in business should be no different than in their personal affairs. There is no such thing as "business ethics" that is separate or different from personal ethics. The things that are true for a person are true for a business. Don't lie. Don't cheat. Don't steal. Be fair and generous with acquaintances, and with employees. A deal is good when it is good for both parties. Don't pollute your neighborhood or harm your neighbors. Treat everyone with dignity. In life and in business, these things we believe.
