Learning Experience Design and Technology Ph.D.

The LXDT Ph.D. program prepares learners for academic roles such as tenure-track faculty, researchers, and clinical instructors ready to teach LXDT courses and mentor graduate students who will join the LXDT profession. Graduates may also assume leadership roles as executive directors and other administrative roles requiring the LXDT specializations and expertise in organizations, companies, educational and training centers, and research institutes in various settings including business, government, military, and non-profit contexts.

The LXDT Ph.D. Program is structured to help you achieve the following objectives:

Build strong theoretical and practical foundations in learning experience design, learning sciences, learning / instructional design and technology, critical digital pedagogies, adult learning theories.
Develop strong competencies in needs analysis, design, development, and evaluation of human-centered learning environments through creation and use of learning technologies, according to evidence-based research. Contexts include formal and informal learning environments in online, blended, or in-person formats.
Develop a strong command of various authoring and other tools for designing and developing effective digital learning and instructional / learning environments and applications, according to deep understanding of learning and critical theories and based on evidence-based research and critical inquiry.
Build strong research competences using a variety of research methodologies, methods, and tools to address research problems related to learning and instruction, with particular attention to learner centered and critical approaches.
Conduct design-based research to develop insights about learner’s experience, assess learning outcomes, and evaluate the effectiveness of a learning environment that has been designed and developed for the purpose of improving design products and learning experience.
Develop a strong sense of ethical and professional responsibility for the field and society.
Develop cultural competence and equity literacy and apply those competences in instructional design and development and educational technology.
Develop researcher identity and critical reflection abilities necessary to generate original and creative contributions for the betterment of educational / learning systems and society.

Program Requirements

The LXDT Ph.D. Degree requires 90 credit hours of graduate study, including:

Philosophical Core (13 hrs), Research Methodology Core (18 hrs), Development Core (6 hrs), Critical Core (3 hrs), and a variety of individually-tailored seminars, directed readings, and intenstive and specialization courses.

Credit hours from a previously earned master’s degree may apply toward the total number of hours required for this degree.

New Applicants to OU (anyone not a current OU graduate student)

Applicants must be accepted by both the program for which they are applying and the Graduate College. The University has a unified online application that fulfills both the LXDT Program and Graduate College application requirements simultaneously. Once all required application materials have been uploaded and your application is complete, the application will first be reviewed by the Graduate College personnel. Rolling Admissions: Applications to the LXDT Ph.D. program are reviewed throughout the year, as they come in.

For fullest admissions consideration, including possible assistantship appointments, and for international students seeking a VISA to study in the U.S, Please apply by February 1st.

Completed applications will be reviewed first by the OU Graduate College. After that, the LXDT program area faculty will review your materials and you will receive an admissions decision through the college.
