Find your study abroad program by term

Choosing the right study abroad experience starts with selecting the term that best fits your academic and financial plans. Whether you're looking for a short-term program, a semester-long adventure, or a full academic year abroad, each option offers unique benefits and considerations.

Short-Term

Short-term programs, including summer and winter session options, are perfect for students who want a global experience without committing to a full semester. These programs often provide immersive academic and cultural experiences in just a few weeks. However, it's important to note that summer study abroad typically comes with an extra cost since students are paying for additional coursework beyond their regular tuition.

Winter Session

Winter session programs provide an opportunity to study abroad between the fall and spring semester, often lasting 10-14 days. Some programs allow students to take advantage of OU's flat-rate tuition as long as they meet the requirements, making it a cost-effective way to earn credits abroad.

Spring Break

Spring break study abroad programs offer a short yet impactful international experience, typically lasting 7-10 days. These programs are usually tied to a course you enroll in for the spring semester, allowing you to apply what you learn in the classroom to real-world settings abroad. Since they take place during the regular semester, students may be able to use financial aid to help cover costs.

Summer Session

Summer study abroad programs offer flexibility, ranging from as short as two weeks to as long as two months. Many programs also include internship opportunities, allowing students to gain hands-on experience in an international setting. While summer tuition is typically an additional cost, students can use banked hours from the academic year on some programs, helping to reduce expenses. Additionally, students can choose a provider program, which allows them to study abroad without paying OU tuition, making it a more budget-friendly option for those looking to manage costs.

Semester & Academic Year

A semester abroad offers a deeper cultural and academic experience while staying on track for graduation. Since you’re already budgeting for tuition, housing, and meals on campus, the cost of studying abroad for a semester can be comparable—or even more affordable—depending on the program and host country. Many semester programs allow you to use financial aid, scholarships, and existing tuition plans, making it a cost-effective way to study abroad.

For the most immersive experience, consider spending a full academic year abroad. This option allows you to fully integrate into your host culture, gain deeper language skills, and build long-term connections. While the cost structure is similar to a semester abroad, you’ll want to plan ahead to ensure financial aid and scholarships cover both terms.
