Study abroad isn’t one-size-fits-all—your ideal program depends on the type of experience you’re looking for! OU offers a variety of program options, including traditional study abroad programs, international internships, and study away opportunities within the U.S. Whether you want to take courses at an international university, gain hands-on work experience abroad, or explore a different region of the U.S., there’s a program that fits your goals.
No matter your path, each experience will help you develop skills, expand your perspective, and set you apart in your future career. You'll work with your study abroad advisor to identify what the best program type is for you!
Study abroad programs allow students to take academic courses at partner institutions or study centers around the world while earning credit toward their degree. These programs range from a few weeks to a full semester or year and offer immersive experiences in different cultural and academic environments. We have four different program types, each of which is going to have a different level of OU support, cultural immersion, course offerings, financing, etc.
At our International Study Centers in Italy and Mexico, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the language and culture of your host country. Engage in meaningful conversations with locals, participate in community service projects, and gain professional experience through internships—all with the support of on-site OU staff. These programs provide a unique and enriching environment to learn, grow, and connect with both the community and your academic goals.
Located in the vibrant Tuscan city of Arezzo, OUA provides the best of both worlds: a home-away-from-home with OU classmates, faculty and staff, and the chance to immerse yourself in a new culture.
Located in Puebla, a historic city known for its rich culture and culinary traditions, OUP offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in Mexican culture while taking classes alongside local students.
Faculty-Led programs are designed for students who want to take OU courses with OU professors while traveling abroad with fellow students. These programs are offered exclusively as short-term options, typically ranging from 2 to 4 weeks, making them ideal for students who do not want to be away for longer periods. Faculty-led programs provide a high level of OU support, ensuring you have both academic and logistical assistance while abroad. With offerings during Winter Session, Spring Break, and Summer, these programs offer a great opportunity for immersive learning without the long-term commitment.
Partner University programs give you the chance to take classes at a university abroad while still paying OU tuition and fees at your normal rate. This means you can apply tuition waiver scholarships and any applicable financial aid, making it a seamless and financially accessible way to study abroad. In many cases, studying abroad through a Partner University can be comparable in cost—or even more affordable—than spending a semester in Norman. These programs are perfect for students looking for full cultural and academic immersion, offering the opportunity to live and learn alongside local and international students. With both long-term and summer options available, you can find the perfect fit for your study abroad experience!

Partner Provider programs are third-party study abroad companies that offer incredible opportunities to explore the world. Through OU approved providers, these programs give you access to a vast selection of destinations, academic courses, and hands-on internship opportunities. Whether you’re looking for a unique location, a specialized field of study, or a more independent experience, provider programs can make it happen. Tuition and fees are paid directly to your provider, not to the University of Oklahoma, giving you more flexibility in budgeting. Some financial aid may apply.
Internships abroad provide hands-on professional experience in an international setting, allowing students to build their resumes while gaining valuable global work experience. These opportunities help students develop intercultural communication skills, adapt to diverse work environments, and enhance their career prospects in a competitive job market. You can choose to do just an internship over the summer or pair it with a study abroad experience to earn credit, either during the summer or as part of a long-term program. This combination allows you to maximize your time abroad while gaining both academic and professional experience.
Study away programs offer a unique opportunity to explore diverse regions of the United States, providing the chance to participate in special programs in new cultural and regional contexts—no passport required. Whether you're looking to engage in academic coursework, gain professional experience, or explore new environments, study away programs offer enriching opportunities to broaden your perspective and enhance your learning experience within the U.S.
