Black History Month provides an opportunity to emphasize voices in the Black community in memory of its triumphs and struggles in the past and present.
The United States guaranteed equal rights to all citizens only 59 years ago after African people had been treated as property for centuries. As the Black community continues to face setbacks from unjust government interference, it is even more important to remember its history and look forward to future successes.
Although using this month to highlight the Black community remains essential every year, the community must also be amplified during the other months. The features in this edition of the Gaylord Extra are designed to honor voices in the Black community, not tokenize them.
These voices in our college tell past stories and guide our future in the right direction. We strive to regularly share them throughout editions to come while also magnifying them every February. Please enjoy this edition of the Gaylord Extra.

Armand McCoy, executive director and faculty advisor of Lindsey + Asp, continues his career at Gaylord College. Starting at OU in March of 2022, McCoy has been in connection with the university for more than 10 years. McCoy comes to Gaylord from Trifecta Communications, where he served as president and COO. During his time there he had many interactions with faculty and students at Gaylord, especially Lindsey + Asp.

Police Chief Nate Tarver is an alumnus who graduated in 1978 with a degree in broadcast journalism. Tarver has served all three OU campuses and has worked for various police departments before joining OU.

Zaria Oates, a 2022 graduate, took every opportunity Gaylord had to offer her. She made connections and became involved in organizations that allowed her to thrive as a rising journalist.

The Lumine Lifetime Achievement Award is an award designed by Gaylord College to honor extraordinary women professionals in the media industry. This year’s award was given to Sharon Miller, an Oklahoma director, screenwriter, editor and producer.

The University Counseling Center provides comprehensive mental health services at OU. Its mission is to provide high-quality counseling and crisis intervention to our campus community members, consultation and outreach services to campus organizations, and training and supervision opportunities for emerging mental health clinicians. The center promotes the psychological well-being of all members of the university community. Counselors are available virtually from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The OU Writing Center is a pedagogical service that supports the writing development of all members of the OU and Norman community. The primary goal of our consultations is to help writers learn something they can use in the future.
