Gaylord College Welcomes New York Times Staff for Day of Collaboration, Insights and Opportunities

Oct. 19, 2023

NORMAN, Okla. On Monday, Oct. 23, the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Oklahoma welcomed two staff members from The New York Times.

Theodore "Ted" Kim, Director of Newsroom Career Programs, and Keiko Morris, Director of Journalism Recruiting, were touring various schools and organizations along the I-35 corridor. This initiative by The New York Times aims to connect students from underrepresented backgrounds, with a special focus on Indigenous journalism students, and to promote career opportunities to the next generation of journalists.

Over the course of the day, Kim and Morris visited with journalism faculty, met with Interim Dean David Craig and experienced a guided tour of Gaylord Hall. Additionally, Kim and Morris engaged with students in multiple classes, providing insight on their careers and the industry.

The day's highlight was “An Evening with The New York Times,” a Q&A session with Kim and Morris from 6-7 p.m. in the Gaylord Hall auditorium hosted by the Gaylord Ambassadors. The event was open to all Gaylord students and faculty.  Following the event, Kim and Morris joined OU's division of the Indigenous Journalists Association (IJA) for a dinner and discussion.
