African Studies Institute Announces 2024 Student Research Grant

We're pleased to announce that we are now accepting applications for the 2024 African Studies Institute Student Research Grant!

In the interest of promoting African studies and supporting student research at the University of Oklahoma, the African Studies Institute will provide a Student Research Grant of up to $1,000 to support independent student research or creative activity related to African studies. The competition is open to all undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at the University of Oklahoma.

Are you interested in conducting independent research or producing creative work about Africa/African Studies themes?
Engaged in ongoing research/creative activity relevant to the continent?
Traveling to Africa and hoping to conduct research or study a particular topic while there?
Planning to apply for a nationally competitive scholarship to Africa, and need to craft a research idea?
Looking for travel support to present research/creative scholarship related to African studies at a conference?

If “yes,” The African Studies Institute wants YOU to apply!

Application Requirements

Proposal (two pages maximum, single-spaced, 12 point font) describing the research/creative project clearly, explaining its significance to African studies and explaining how it will contribute to the student’s professional or academic development.
CV or Resume
Itemized budget
One letter of recommendation (emailed by the recommender directly)

Members of the scholarships committee are available to help applicants prepare a budget, craft a compelling proposal, and prepare a CV or resume. Please contact Drs. Andreana Prichard (aprichard@ou.edu) AND Claire Nicholas (cbnicholas@ou.edu) at least a week before the deadline for assistance.

Letters of recommendation should be sent directly to Drs. Prichard and/or Nicholas by the recommender

Applicants will be notified of decisions by April 4, 2024. Applicants selected for funding will be required to submit a report to the African Studies Institute executive committee at the end of research/creative project, including a report of how funds were expended, due by May 31, 2025.
