Undergraduate Program

The David L. Boren College of International Studies offers 9 majors, 11 minors, and an accelerated BA/MA program for undergraduates.

  • Our 9 majors offer a strong foundation of knowledge across multiple international fields of study with the flexibility to accommodate diverse interests and career goals.
  • Our 11 minors pair well with any major, are highy adaptable, and add valuable credentials, skills and knowledge to your primary field of study.
  • Our unique interdisciplinary program allows you to take courses from a wide variety of departments across OU, and we prioritize foreign language study as well as study abroad/away experiences.

CIS graduates enter a wide variety of careers, including:

  • international affairs and diplomacy
  • nonprofits, NGOs and think tanks
  • law, journalism, politics and academia

Our Majors

  • Asian Studies majors gain an understanding of the fundamentals of the civilizations of Asia in both traditional and modern settings and in-depth knowledge of specific areas within the region.
  • Course options include anthropology, art, geography, history, music, philosophy, political science, sociology, and modern languages, literatures and linguistics with an Asian focus.
  • Majors gain an understanding of modern Western European history, culture and politics.
  • Course of study includes Western European literature, art, history and geography, as well as political and economic structure.
  • Additional course options include anthropology, architecture, drama, geography, history of science, music, philosophy, and modern languages, literature and linguistics.
  • Emphasizes policy, management and sustainability in an international context.
  • Three areas of concentration and ability to specialize in regions of the world allows majors to combine thematic interest with area studies expertise.
  • Majors complete an internship or service learning project with an energy company or internationally oriented environmental NGO.
  • Majors gain skills to analyze and understand socioeconomic issues in developing countries.
  • Course focus includes development economics and political economy as well as development from historical, cultural and social perspectives.
  • Students also pursue a more specialized sequence of courses around a relevant international theme of their choosing.
  • This major offers the broadest spectrum of material in the International Studies program.
  • Majors gain a global perspective on world affairs and understanding of the international system.
  • Interdisciplinary curriculum focuses on world history, global politics and global economics.
  • Majors gain an understanding of Latin American history, culture and politics.
  • Course of study includes Latin America's economic, geographic, social and political patterns and challenges.
  • Majors examine the historical ties between Latin America and the United States in relation to the commonality of cultures and objectives that are becoming stronger as interdependence grows.
  • Majors combine their study of either Arabic, Hebrew or Persian with courses in the history, religions and cultures of the Middle East from ancient to contemporary times.
  • Provides a basic understanding of the peoples and history of this diverse and culturally rich region of the world, as well as a firm foundation for further study.
  • Majors gain a deep understanding of Russia and its neighboring countries in Eastern Europe and Eurasia.
  • Major provides a broad and multidisciplinary introduction to the larger region, with course offerings in Russian language, literature, political science, history, economics and geography.

Our Minors

Students must successfully complete at least 15 hours of courses acceptable for major credit in IAS, including at least 9 hours at the upper-division level.

Students must successfully complete at least 15 hours of courses acceptable for major credit in African Studies, including at least 9 hours at the upper-division level.

Students must successfully complete at least 15 hours of courses acceptable for major credit in International Development, including at least 9 hours at the upper-division level.

  • This minor offers the broadest spectrum of material in the International Studies program.

  • Designed for the student with an interest in foreign policy or national/international security.
  • Specialized classes help minors understand the global institutions, policies and issues that affect security around the world.

Students must successfully complete at least 15 hours of courses acceptable for major credit in International Security Studies, including at least 9 hours at the upper-division level.

Students must successfully complete at least 15 hours of courses acceptable for major credit in Iranian Studies, including at least 9 hours at the upper-division level. 

  • Minors study Latin American history, culture and politics.
  • Course of study includes Latin America's economic, geographic, social and political patterns and challenges.
  • Course examine the historical ties between Latin America and the United States in relation to the commonality of cultures and objectives that are becoming stronger as interdependence grows.

Students must successfully complete at least 15 hours of courses acceptable for major credit in Latin American Studies, including at least 9 hours at the upper-division level.

  • Minors take courses in the history, religions and cultures of the Middle East from ancient to contemporary times.

Students must successfully complete at least 15 hours in Middle Eastern Studies, including at least 9 hours at the upper-division level.

Welcome from the CIS advisors! 

We are pleased you have chosen to study with the David L. Boren College of International Studies. Our office is here to assist you as you work toward achieving your academic goals. We wish to emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of international issues today, encourage professional development, create an atmosphere for mentoring and help you best maximize your study abroad experience. The advising staff hopes to provide an avenue for you to get involved with the College, the University, the community and the world.  It is also our goal to better prepare you for the ever-changing international workplace.
 
Our doors are open if you have questions about academics or student involvement. In our advising office, we will meet with you each semester on an individual basis. We appreciate the opportunity to welcome you to the academic community and wish you the best at the University of Oklahoma.
