Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Lab Policies

NMR Lab Rules

  • Food and drink are not allowed when operating the NMR instruments.
  • After completing the NMR experiment, do not leave any items (wallet, cell phone, watch, etc.) and NMR tubes in the NMR lab.
  • Every authorized NMR user must sign the NMR logbook when using the NMR instrument.
  • An authorized NMR user is either an undergraduate, graduate, or Postdoctoral Fellow who has received NMR training and has a supervisor account (login name and password).
  • Using someone else's account is strictly forbidden.
  • Be sure not to wear lab gloves or lab coats into the NMR room when operating the NMR instrument.  In addition, your hands should also be clean before performing NMR experiments.
  • Use only high quality and clean NMR tubes. Using dirty NMR tubes can damage the NMR Probe.
  • Additionally, any NMR tube (loose or tight) that is not properly inserted into the spinner should not be used.
  • The NMR tube should always be thoroughly wiped with clean Kim-wipes before inserting it into the spinner. NMR tubes and spinners should be kept as clean as possible to prevent contamination and dirt build-up on the probe and spinner itself.
  • Always use a Depth gauge to properly position the sample on the spinner before placing it on the magnet. Make sure the NMR sample tube is securely held to the spinner. When inserting an NMR tube into the spinner, it should not move down on its own. If you gently push it while rotating clockwise and at the same time push down, it will move down until it comes out of the bottom of the spinner.
  • The NMR Facility Manager will allocate a portion of the instrument time for maintenance, repairs, upgrades, and calibration of the instrument for required experiments. These times will vary from week to week as needed. Magnets are typically filled with liquid nitrogen (every week) on Tuesday mornings (9:30 am to 12:00 pm). It is undesirable to use the NMR instrument during the day of filling the NMR magnets with liquid Helium. The NMR user will be informed about it one day before the filling day.
  • If a user reserves an overnight time slot, user is responsible for properly stopping the NMR experiment and removing the sample from the magnet, logging off, and ensuring that the NMR instrument is ready for the next user.
  • Do not keep NMR data files on hard drives for more than two months. All data will be deleted without notice.
  • Report instrument problems immediately to the NMR Facility manager (phone: 681 357 2486) to resolve the issue.
  • If the NMR tube breaks while inserting the sample into the magnet, it is the user's responsibility to contact me immediately by phone (681 357 2486) or stop by at my office (NMR Room 1800). It is also the user’s responsibility to put a large notice on the instrument's computer keyboard stating that no one can use the NMR instrument until the broken pieces are removed from the Probe and any other possible issues are resolved.

NMR Training & Account Setup

  • NMR account holders must be from the Department of Chemistry/Biochemistry and other affiliated Departments within the University of Oklahoma and must have an OU Chartfield number.
  • An NMR training session is essentially intended for either an individual or a group of users and will be more effective if the user receives and reads the appropriate manual before the session.
  • The user can bring their own sample of interest for hands-on experience during NMR training.
  • Please contact Dr Novruz Akhmedov by e-mail (Novruz.Akhmedov@ou.edu) to schedule an appointment for NMR training and account setup.
  •  Users can get two ways of NMR training manual or automation. The NMR training path you choose is up to you.
