Week 2 (Overview) Please, reload this page each time you view it, (I'm updating often). Some of you what to know what is the simplest thing I can do to complete this weeks requirements for WebStudy (so we can get on with the Christmas Vacation). I'll do my best to describe what I'm thinking. I'm not looking for "lots of work" (we all have different skill levels and available time). I just want you to "publish" a TEST Web Page. Enough for you to know "how to publish." Netscape is "primitive" technology. This is not the flagship software of the Microsoft Corporation. Those of you that use Microsoft Word should know, the composition tools in Netscape are very fundamental. Pictures and text, and some composition tools are all you "really have" to work with. Today, you will read how Netscape Composer saves your work as HTML files. Some of you know how to write HTML (in a text file) and use that method to create web pages. You will find Netscape Composer much easier and very powerful. (Try it) Remember, you can only use
.gif and .jpg images in your "test" page. Keep images very small
until you understand file size. (<30k).
Monday, December 21st and Tuesday, December 22nd
Create a small "TEST" web page, and call it test.html . You can create the test web page from scratch (p.227), from a templet (p. 228-229), with the Page Wizard (p. 230-231), or Edit an existing page (p. 232-233). (A suggestion, please try all methods to determine which you prefer). For example: http://www.ou.edu/class/webstudy/DEC98/gallery/dpf/test.html
http://www.ou.edu/class/webstudy/DEC98/gallery/ Look at "how" it is constructed
within a folder titled DEC98/gallery
Most "problems" occur via typing errors! (The address must be exactly as described). Notice, each of you has a single folder (with your initials). For example: My
folder is: (Dennis Paul Fehler = dpf)
There
is a test HTML file (inside my dpf folder) named test.html
There
is an image file (inside my dpf folder) named chia_prof3.JPG
See how that works??? Understanding the "address structure" is the KEY to web publishing success.
How did I put the test.html page on the web site? Open "your" test page test.html in Netscape Communicator. (created as instructed above) From the Netscape toolbar choose: File, then Edit Page. (Or you can open your test
page directly using Netscape Composer, Ref: p. 223).
To publish the web page, click-on the Publish Button on the Netscape "Composer" Toolbar. (This dialog box will appear).
Use
the following information to complete the dialog box:
3 webstu98
A Reminder: The ftp: address is for publishing, the http: address is for viewing. The ftp: address requires a password, the http: doesn't. For viewers to "see" your files (without using a password), use the http: address (as above) to refer to your page in, for example, your e-mail. Your folder "viewing"
address is:
The folder "publishing"
address is:
You are encouraged to experiment. Publish something that "challenges" your ability. If you try something and it doesn't quite work..., that is OK. I'd rather you try and fail than "play it safe" and do something uninteresting.
Please Remember...,
