DEC98 WebStudy Course Content Outline

Monday  |  Tuesday  |  Wednesday  |  Thursday  |  Friday

Week 1 (Overview)

The first week is dedicated to getting to know each other, getting organized, and learning how to handle the Netscape Software. While we get organized, I'd like for you to accomplish several tasks that will help you gather necessary Internet skills.  Please make every effort to accomplish everything listed.

Use your e-mail for "private" discussions, for "group" discussions, and to "turn in" (these and other) assignments.  My OU address is:  Dennis_Fehler@ou.edu  (which e-mail forwards to:)  fehler@texnet.net .  (You may use either address to contact me).

Reading assignment page numbers refer to the WebStudy Textbook unless otherwise specified.

Week 1 Reading Assignment (summary)

Begin reading pages 121 - 201,  Part III, Mail, Discussion Groups.  These pages contain the information you need to use Netscape e-mail.  If you experience any technical problems or need any assistance with "hooking up" your e-mail contact the help desk or call: (405) 325-4636.

The two most prominent difficulties..., connecting to the mail server, and providing your Reply To:  Identity can be solved by reading Pages 331 and 329.  As a test, send e-mail to yourself, (look at "what you get" in return e-mail).  Is your address correct?  Can you "Reply To" that address successfully?  (If your Reply To Address says:  username@netscape.com  that is incorrect)

Please note:  If your Reply To address is wrong (for any reason) I can't contact you?  For example, if you are using someone else's machine, or a "new" machine in the computer lab.  Logging on the network at OU does not configure the Reply To address in Netscape.  You must do that.

  • Keep me posted on your assignment scheduling intentions, and where you are located (working location), or going to be located.

  • Read Frames (p. 49-55)
  • Read The Address Book (p.175-183)
  • Groups meet via e-mail to discuss the mailing list exchange (Assignment is outlined below).  Individual groups should determine the "best way" before exchanging the mail lists.  Also, groups should discuss the necessity for the Friday "face" meetings.
Work Assignment Details:
  • Create a signature file for your e-mail (p.173-174).  Use a minimum of 3-5 lines of information.  Also, the signature file should reflect your Webstudy group or your Class involvement rather than your business or professional position.  (Be creative, it is easily changed).
  • Create an address book containing my address, the addresses of all your group classmates.
  • Create a mailing list containing all your classmates (above) (p.178).  Send one "mass mailing" to all of your GROUP classmates containing (some) information of your choosing.  (Keep it simple and small).  A suggestion:  You might exchange your e-mail Address list with other groups (or group members).

Thursday, December 17th

  • Groups meet for lunch (if necessary).  I would prefer you work out your schedules and discuss your voting schemes remotely (by Internet), but if all else fails, meet face to face.
  • Read Organizing Messages (p. 185-195)

  • Send one e-mail message to one classmate, with one (small, 10k) image attached (p 158).  Send a Cc: of that message (with image) to another classmate at the same time.
  • Send three e-mail messages to your classmates with one attached web page (p.170). (In 3 separate messages).
  • Create a small .txt file using Notepad or Wordpad (you can use your signature file if you like).  Send the .txt file to two of your classmates (p.169).

  • Create a mail filter of your choice (p.192).  Test the effectiveness using the assistance of your classmates.

Friday, December 18th

Friday is "catch-up" day. (redo any of the weeks lessons you need to).

  • I want you to "get together" with (at least 3 of) your WebStudy classmates today.  The purpose is to review all the assignments (listed above) and demonstrate (to each other) shortcuts and better ways of doing it.  Your meeting should be 30 minutes to 45 minutes maximum, and can be any place where the group feel comfortable.  This should be a physical meeting (not virtual).
  • You should be able to surf the web with ease, and have bookmarks of your favorite URL's.
  • I'd like for you to have your Address book accurate and complete.
  • You should have a mailing list of just your group members.
  • You should be able to send .gif and .jpg images (and URL's) to anyone on the Internet.
  • I'd like for you to have the "best" signature file you can create. (Incorporated "within" should be your first day student number, and your group name).
  • I'd like for you to "really" begin to understand how Netscape (e-mail) works.
  • I'd like for you to be "experimenting" with mail filters. (requires some advanced skills)
That is it, have a great weekend.
