Shane Hough ("Huff") is the Diplomat in Residence, or DIR, for Oklahoma. A DIR is a career foreign service officer and specialist who provides students with guidance and shares insight on careers, internships and fellowships related to careers in foreign affairs, policy, the State department, and other related fields. Though Hough is based at Tulane University in New Orleans, he is available to meet via Zoom with University of Oklahoma students, and also visits campus regularly to host information sessions and speak to classes.

BIO
Shane Hough is a career Foreign Service Officer with 21 years of service with the U.S. Department of State.  He is the Diplomat in Residence based at Tulane University in New Orleans, working to recruit the next generation of diverse talent for rewarding careers with the State Department from across the Central South Region.  

Shane most recently served as the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Director for U.S. Embassy Tegucigalpa, Honduras and as the Chief of Political and Economic Affairs at U.S. Embassy Asunción, Paraguay.  Other assignments include with the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs expediting the issuance of Afghan Special Immigrant Visas, as the State Department’s Peru Desk Officer, as an Economics Officer at Embassy Guatemala City, and as a Consular Officer at Embassy San Salvador and U.S. Consulate General Guayaquil, Ecuador.  He also served as a Refugee Assistance Officer with the Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, coordinating U.S. humanitarian relief for refugees in central and eastern Africa.

Shane is a graduate of Louisiana Tech University’s College of Engineering and worked as a research and design engineer before joining the Peace Corps where he served as a teacher in Tanzania.  He also graduated from the American University’s School of International Service with a master’s degree in international development management.

Internships

Internship experience can make a very valuable contribution to a student’s educational development, and students in the College of International Studies are strongly encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities when they become available. Under certain conditions, it is possible to earn academic credit for an internship in the Department of International and Area Studies. See more information and requirements at the links below.

College of International Studies Internship

CIS student interns assist the College of International Studies with special projects related to conferences, events, press and media preparation, and outreach to students, including recruiting for OU in Arezzo and assisting with immigration issues for international students. Students selected for the internship will enroll in IAS 3910 and write a 10-15 page research paper on a topic agreed upon with the course professor.
