Social Security Number (SSN) Application Procedure
- Obtain an original employment offer letter. Departments must follow the guidelines here.
- Request a DSO letter for SSN from ISS.
- Call the Social Security Administration (SSA) Office in Moore (number below) to schedule an appointment to apply for your Social Security Number. They will then explain your next steps.
- Mention your visa type and employment start date.
- You may request a free interpreter service for the call.
- Documents required by the Social Security Administration to apply for your SSN
- Original copy of your employment offer letter
- Original copy of the DSO letter for SSN (created by ISS)
- I-20 copy (an original is not required)
- Passport
- I-94 printout from i94.cbp.dhs.gov
- Original copy of your employment offer letter
- You may be required to travel to an in-person appointment in Moore. Use the EMBARK bus service, route 144 to travel to the Moore SSA office.
You have the option to request your SSN card online at https://secure.ssa.gov/ossnap/public/landingOSsnap. Then visit your local SSA to present your documents.
Can I work while I wait to receive my SSN?
An F-1 or J-1 student may work while the SSA processes the SSN application. US employers may wish to reference the SSA fact sheet, Employer Responsibilities When Hiring Foreign Workers, which contains information on how to report wages for an employee who has not yet received a SSN.
