Healthcare
All international students must enroll in the OU Student Health Plan, or provide evidence of suitable alternative health coverage to receive a waiver.
For information, visit the HR Student Health Plan webpage, or contact the Student Health Plan office by phone at (405) 325-2961. Additionally, please visit https://ou.myahpcare.com/
Note: Enrollment in the Student Health Plan does not mean that you will receive free prescriptions. You will be required to pay a small fee, called a copay, each time you purchase a prescription drug, even if you do so through the university Goddard Health Center.
Health Insurance for F-1 Students
The University of Oklahoma (OU) policy requires that F-1 international students and their accompanying F-2 dependents purchase and maintain hospital, medical and repatriation insurance.
As an OU student, you will automatically be covered by the Student Health Plan beginning on the first day of classes. If you arrive in the US prior to the first day of classes, it is important to note that you will not have University provided student insurance until that date. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that you purchase traveler’s insurance to cover the time between your date of entry and the first day of classes.
Health Insurance for J-1 Students
US Department of State regulations require that all J-1 students and their accompanying dependents purchase and maintain adequate health and accident insurance, with the current minimum coverage guidelines:
- Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness;
- Repatriation of remains in the amount of $25,000;
- Expenses associated with the medical evacuation of exchange visitors to his or her home country in the amount of $50,000; and
- Deductibles not to exceed $500 per accident or illness.
It is a violation of J-1 status to fail to maintain health insurance coverage that meets the above guidelines. All international students and their accompanying dependents must purchase health and accident insurance coverage before they can enroll at OU.
Waiver Process
Students covered by a qualifying plan other than the university-sponsored plan may choose to waive (decline) the Student Health Plan offered by OU. In this case students must complete the waiver application on the Academic Health Plans website. The waiver process must be completed for each semester in which you wish to waive the OU Student Health Insurance Plan. The deadline to do so is typically within the first few weeks of each semester. If you miss the deadline to request a waiver or your waiver request is denied, you will be automatically enrolled in the OU Student Health Plan, and will be charged the fee. For information on waiver eligibility, please visit the OU HR website.
