Craig St. John

Demography with an emphasis on residential segregation, particularly on factors that cause segregation to change over time and which contribute to the changes in the extent to which the wealthy and the poor are isolated from other groups.

I consider myself to be a social demographer. Most of my scholarship has focused on various dimensions of residential segregation by race and social class. As an example, my 2002 Urban Affairs Review article examines the extent to which the demographic composition and economic structure of metropolitan areas contribute to the concentration of affluence, that is, the concentration of affluent households in neighborhoods in which other households also are affluent. I have taught a wide range of courses since joining the faculty at OU in 1980, but recently my teaching has focused on an undergraduate course called Population and Society, a graduate course in Social Demography, and statistics courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. I have served as chair of the OU Sociology Department since 2003, having previously served as chair of the department from 1988-1992. I have been married to Gayle St. John since 1976 and have two children, Andy and Hayley. In my spare time I enjoy swimming, cycling, snow skiing, and golf. I am the proud owner of two holes in one!
