Congratulations to the 2024 Graduate Student Award Winners

Each year, the sociology department presents two graduate students awards for excellence in research, teaching/TA work, and service to the department. These are the highest honor presented by our department to our graduate students and all awards winner are nominated by a professor with the winners decided by departmental committee.

2024 Outstanding MA Student Award


The 2024 Outstanding Master’s Student Award was presented Taylor Gamble. Taylor has demonstrated excellence in his Research, Service, and dedication to environmental sociology during his time at OU Sociology.  He has successfullydefended his thesis entitled, "Cloudy with a Chance of Conservation: How Perception Shapes Conservation Behavior" and has been admitted and will be attending the University of Oklahoma PhD program in sociology in fall 2024.

2024 Outstanding PhD Student Award


The 2024 Outstanding Doctoral Student Award was presented to Elizabeth (Liz) McElory. During her time in our department, Liz has excelled in her research publishing six articles in peer reviewer journal with several other projects currently under review. She is also an outstanding teacher and is the first graduate student to be invited to teach undergraduate statistics in our departments history. Liz is also active in departmental service acting as a peer mentor for many of our graduate students and serving as president of DOCS and a regular presentor at ADQUANT. Liz defended her dissertation titled, "The Pleasure Placebo: The Role of Religion and Gender in Sexual Enjoyment" and  has accepted a post-doctorial position at the School of Public Health at the University of Indiana, Bloomington.  

Grasmick/Riddle Summer Research Fellowship

Each year, the sociology department awards a series of funded summer research oportunities thanks to the generous donations of Harold Grasmick and Helen Riddle. Each funded project will each receive $3000 to dedicate to their research and they will present their research in the departments spring symposium. Conglations to each award winner (listed with faculty advisor) and good luck on the research this summer!

  • Natalie Dickson (with Dr. Ann Beutel): Who Put the Patriarchy in Polyamory? The 'One Penis Policy' and Perceptions of Masculinity among Polyamorous Men
  • Ami Frost (with Dr. Cyrus Schleifer): "Changes of Heart: How Change in Marital Status Changes Income"
  • Becky Mosier (with Dr Stephanie Burge):  "Nurturing Nomads: The Evolving Landscape of Gig Healthcare Work"
  • Sally Wiser (with Dr. Meredith Worthen):  "Proposal for 2024 Grasmick/Riddle Summer Research Fellowship"
