Senior sociology major Miguel Matancillas Prieto won the 2023 Oklahoma Sociological Association Student Essay Competition. The essay, titled he Sociological Imagination, is about the importance of the sociological imagination, why it is still taught today, and the current state of the discipline of sociology, especially the differences between academic and public sociology. The essay also overviews the ways the social imagination is used within other disciplines and practices, such as Women's and Gender Studies, Race and Ethnic Studies, and systems of oppression generally.
Miguel is from Oklahoma City (Crooked Oak High School). He will graduate with his BA in Sociology in May 2024. After graduation, he intends to pursue a graduate degree in sociology.
