OU Sociology graduate Dr. Juanita Ortiz was recently named the Vice-President of Academic Affairs at Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC). Previously, Dr. Ortiz served as Executive Director of Institutional Advancement and Dean of the Social Sciences Division at Rose State College and as a tenure-track faculty member in the Criminal Justice Department at the University of Illinois-Springfield. As VP of Academic Affairs, Dr. Ortiz oversees all academic programs and courses at OCCC, including instructional quality and rigor, curriculum development, adherence to state and national policies, and institutional accreditation standards.
Dr. Ortiz earned all her degrees from the University of Oklahoma. She earned bachelor’s degrees in sociology and political science, a master’s degree in sociology, and a doctoral degree in sociology, with emphases in criminology and stratification. Dr. Ortiz’s research areas include women’s criminal offending and their prisoner recidivism/reentry, with her work on women’s criminal recidivism included in the book, Mean Lives, Mean Laws: Oklahoma’s Women Prisoners (Rutgers University Press).
